- Wedding: February 2017 - historical mansion
This board has been very helpful to me during ring shopping and waiting, and now I am so excited to be engaged! We picked out the ring together in early April, so I knew that this moment would come, but I didn’t know exactly when it would be. My Fiance (eeeee!!) said that it would be sometime before July 1. It turned out that he picked up the ring from the jewelry store on May 4 and proposed this Saturday, May 21. We are going hiking in New Husband next weekend (Memorial Day weekend) and staying up there for a couple of nights, so he thought about doing it then, but he said he didn’t want to make me wait any longer and also I might see it coming if we were going away for the weekend.
So, here’s how it happened! We went over to my parents’ house on Saturday night for dinner with my best friend from college and his husband along with my best friend’s parents. My dad asked me to make some margaritas in the blender, and we were all having a great time. After dinner and before dessert, my Boyfriend or Best Friend stood up and made a toast. He is very gracious and polite and has made heart-felt toasts at a few family gatherings before, so I didn’t think it was anything out of the ordinary. My friends might remember the exact words better than I do because I might still be a little bit in shock, but he said that he felt really lucky to get to spend time with my family and friends and something like, “I don’t know what the future holds, but I know that I want it to be with [my name].” At that point, I realized what was happening, so I stood up, and he took out the ring and said “Will you marry me?” Everyone was kind of screaming and jumping around. My family was not in on the surprise, so we were all surprised! My Fiance said I gasped. Anyway, I said, “Yes!” and then again for good measure a few minutes later because I had forgotten whether or not I said it the first time.
After that, we took some pictures (the one above is silly, but I think it’s cute) and called my brother and sister-in-law who is pregnant with their first baby (and my parents’ first grandchild, my aunt, and my cousins, and my mom called her best friend, who was SOBBING. Fiance called his sister and his dad. And now I am telling you guys!!!
I was really really happy that my friends and my parents were there because that made it even more special and they got to see my joy in person. My parents were hugging and saying, “Our little girl is getting married!” I am 35 (!) so this is a long time coming.
Unbeknownst to me, Fiance had actually planned to propose earlier in the day when we were on a little practice hike nearby to break in his hiking boots for next weekend. He had the ring in his sock (!) during the hike, and we stopped to eat a granola bar and drink some water, so he was going to pull it out then, but it had fallen into the bottom of his foot, so he didn’t want to take off his shoe and be like, “Here’s my smelly foot! Will you marry me?” Hilarious. I think it worked out better being at dinner with my family anyway.
Telling our other family members and friends has been so much fun! My 101-year-old grandfather (!) was the best. My Fiance and I went over to my grandfather’s assisted living place with my aunt (my mom’s older sister/my grandfather’s daughter) to tell him, and he was so happy! He said, “This is the best news I’ve heard since the doctor told my wife she was pregnant,” meaning with my aunt, so it was so touching that my aunt was there to hear him say that too! He also, said, “This is the best news I’ve heard since Hitler died,” which was pretty hilarious. He was in the Army in WWII.
Anyway, yay!!! Here is the ring that I picked out. I didn’t want diamonds, even conflict-free ones because I didn’t want to subject people to being in mines (or something), so I got it custom made with a lab-created sapphire and moissonites as the side stones. We got it from a local jeweler in Boston, which is one of the only brick-and-mortar stores around here that will make stuff with moissonite. A couple of other places I tried said, “No, we don’t use fake stuff,” but I am not trying to play the clear stones as diamonds; I will proudly tell people it is moissonite if they ask.
You can’t see in the picture, but I have saran wrap wrapped around the bottom because it is actually too big right now. I am going see if I can get the store to resize it today. It can fall off if I shake my hand really hard, so it’s not just a little too loose. My Future Sister-In-Law said she is the same ring size as me (4.5), but we compared our rings next to each other and hers can practically fit inside mine! Clearly not getting anything done at work right now so I might as well go to the jewlery store. 🙂 We are tentatively planning a wedding for late February 2017, which is a little crazy because we are in Boston, but my brother got married in Boston in January right after a blizzard, and it still worked out fine. Fingers crossed!
