I’ve been struggling with depression and ADD for a while; in therapy/treatment for about the last 8 months. I suspected that I was going to get a poor review, and talked with my doctor about it. I have talked a bit with my supervisor about my struggles, and was hoping to just get a poor review and not actually lose my job. I like my job and I know that when I’m doing well, I can be very sucessful at my job.
But in the end it didn’t matter. They “eliminated my position” in order to get rid of me. They as much as said that it was based on my performance and the impact of my mental health issues on my work, and that they would be moving someone else into my position in the next 1 to 2 months.
I lost it. Darling Husband JUST got his job back after being cut at the end of the last school year and now this. I had my doc give me a script for Xanax to sleep tonight and make it through this week, since I have to go to work like nothing happened in order to get my work done before an audit on Friday.
As if I needed a reason to be more depressed, more suicidal, and more hopeless.

@wabisabi: I am so sorry that you are going through this. I know exactly how you feel. I wont bother you with my story, but I can just say that even though it can take a long time to find another job and the process can be grueling, it WILL HAPPEN. It could be an even better job, it could be anything you want. I struggle with depression and ADD too, and I know how hopeless things can get. At least you have your husband, and he has a job. You can get through this together!

@wabisabi: I am so sorry to hear about your struggles!!! Hopefully you find a new job soon and things don’t take too long to get back on track. Whenever something like tough for me to handle comes a long I always think that it just sets it up for something better to come along. We, as people, can handle a lot more than we give ourselves credit for. Again, I hope that things get better for you and your Darling Husband soon. If you need to talk to anyone I would be more than happy to listen!

I am so so so sorry you lost your job. You’ll find another one, I’m sure. Chin up!

@wabisabi: Just keep reminding yourself that this is temporary. I know it feels like a hole that’s getting deeper and deeper (I’ve been there!) but it IS temporary. I can’t say things will be better in a month, a year, or 5 years, but they WILL get better and you WILL look back and say “damn, I am one amazing person to have gotten through that!” It will get better.

Are you in the U.S? Did they give you something in writing saying that your position was eliminated? If so, that makes getting unemployment really simple. Don’t take that as me jumping on the “lets
get unemployment for two years” train. Everyone who pays taxes is entitled to a couple of months of emergency aid until you can find reasonable employment. Don’t stress over it. I’ve been fired a time or two. Some doors close so that better doors open.

Oh no! :'( *hugs* I am so sorry that happened to you. They really do need to add a clause at all employers that they won’t discriminate based on mental issues, the same with gender and sexual identity.

@wabisabi: I’m so sorry to hear this! That’s gotta be so tough and honestly I don’t know what to say other than I hope you understand this is just a hiccup. You will pull through and your worth isn’t tied to your job or the fact that you got let go. Your worth is in your character. I hope things start looking up for you ASAP in your job area and also with the other issues you’ve been having!

If you’re in the U.S., you might want to consider consulting an employment lawyer, especially before you sign anything. AFAIK, it’s not legal to fire someone for health reasons, mental or otherwise. This happened to a friend of mine (she was out for a couple weeks with a badly broken arm, and when she came back they fired her), and she ended up with a pretty decent severance package out of it.

@geekspice: This. Them firing you for your situation seemed a little odd to me as well.
And it is ok. You will find something else soon. There is always opportunity if you have an open mind and know where to look 🙂

I second (or third) talking with a lawyer. I’d imagine you could get a free consultation before paying any fees for services to see if you have a case. It all sounds fishy and well, not really all that legal. I know there are good disability laws in the US, if you know where to look, but I’m not sure how mental health factors in (though it should).
I’m sorry you’re going through this. Mental health is something seriously overlooked and underestimated (at least in the US).

So sorry you were fired! I agree with PP – consult with an employment lawyer. Something doesn’t seem right and you may be able to gain something (financially) from their actions.
Keep you chin up and remember that you’ll find another job. A better door will open.

@geekspice: @megz06: @Mrs. Gremmlin: @MsAmandaAnn: I am going to consult a lawyer, just in case, but I’m pretty sure that because my position is tied in with others that were cut as part of a “work force reduction” there is nothing I can do. I have seniority over other employees, quite a bit actually, but because of my low performance over the last months, I’m the one getting let go. And they are going to replace me, but not immediately. Basically since our case load os low, they are going to make due with my two coworkers until enough time has passed that they can move someone else from campus (who’s entire program was cut and she is a total bitch) to take over my position.
It looks like they covered their bases.

@mrstilly: Man, that is just dirty. Maybe you’ll find a silver lining- take a little time to care for yourself and get back out there and find an awesome job that suits you well.

@wabisabi: Huge hugs! I lost a job almost 2 years ago mostly because I’d been going through a hard time for a few months (that and my boss was NOT a nice person). I was upset but I ended up with a better job that I absolutely love for more money.
