I was talking with a co-worker recently and she was asking about my wedding plans. She then asked what my married last name will be, and when I told her, she openly laughed in my face 🙁 I was so shocked and stunned I didn’t even know what to say. I turned to walk away and she said ‘well, it could be worse…” 🙁 I’m so upset!

What a jerk! That woman needs to learn to shut her mouth. Wow.

How rude! I wonder if you would mind telling us what it is?

@auroraborealis: Try not to let her get to you. I don’t know what your name would be, but it probably COULD be worse. If you love your Fiance, and you love the name, that’s all that matters.

Eh.. my married name is Fingeroot.
I dare you to not laugh. People also always think it’s “FingerFOOT” for some reason.
I actually tell people it’s ok to laugh when they first hear my last name. And now that it’s been my last name for almost two years, I’m totally over feeling self concious about it.

Im a teacher, and have had quite a few people ask me if im going to keep my maiden name, becuase “seriously you dont want to deal with how cruel student can be.” Even my Head teacher said she wouldnt change her last name to my husbands.. FUCK THEM ALL!! seriously! I really dont care for your opinion on my last name.. Oh and by the way my last name isnt even anything bad.. I was so surprised by everybodies comments! The only one child who asked me to keep it said.. ” yeah can i still call you by your other one, i have to much to remember as it is.’
Laugh at her face about somehting she says to you next time. but dont let someone else make you feel bad about your last name..

My new last name is going to be one hardly anyone will get right, it is probably pretty unusual as it is persian… FI’s dad is half persian. My current last name however is Jeter, and I get asked if I’m related to Derek Jeter CONSTANTLY. So I just accept that I’ll always have a different sort of last name… I’ve had people laugh about Mazhari, but I think it’s pretty!! Don’t worry about rude people.

Yikes! That’s unbelievable! Some people have no manners.

That’s horrible! Don’t let it get to you. My maiden name is difficult for most people to pronounce since it’s Armenian and people ALWAYS get it wrong. When they find out what my new last name will be, they tend to say, “Phew, that’s so much better than your maiden name and shorter, too!” I’ve learned to just let that slide. I like my maiden name even though it’s difficult for non-Armenians to pronounce and that it’s 11 letters long. I was definitely insulted the first time someone said “Thank god you’re getting rid of that last name!” Be proud of your new last name and don’t allow anyone to give you crap about it.

Yikes, that’s awful!! I have an unusual new last name as well. It’s a very commonly used adjective, but not a common name. It’s like being named Mrs. Amazing. So, we get LOTS of jokes when people first hear our name. Things like, “oh that’s an AMAZING last name” or “are you really AMAZING?” (That’s not my name, but it’s similar to the idea…).
I really like my new last name, but the rude jokes are unwelcome. Ignore it, or in my case, I usually laugh along and say, “well of course! So, am I going to get something extra amazing for being so amazing?” Hehe… 🙂

I’m another bee who has had numerous people laugh at my future name. It hurts, because I want to love it, but feel awful when people laugh. It’s hard to just ignore it. I’ve actually decided that although I will take his name, I will keep my maiden name for my teaching career.. because it’s something teenagers will have a field day with in a really crude way, which I don’t really feel like dealing with on a regular basis. yea. so I feel your pain! In the end though, I know I will probably eventually get over it, and learn to love my new name.

She is lame. That’s all there is too it. Besides, I like unique last names! It’s better than the run of the mill “johnson” type name (no offense to any Johnson’s out there!!!)
