After I’d had my engagement ring for almost a year, one of the prongs on the setting came loose. We took it back to the jeweler where we bought it to have it fixed. Three months later, I looked down at my hand on the way to work and one of the side stones was missing – the prong had broken off, and the stone had fallen out.
We took it back to be fixed. The first time they “fixed” it, the replacement was kind of a mess – not aligned properly, not symmetrical (it’s a 3-stone emerald cut ring, with trapezoidal side stones) and we were very upset, so they agreed to redo it – and they rebuilt the setting completely.
My Darling Husband just went to pick up the ring yesterday, and bought it home. This time, there aren’t technical problems with the setting – it looks fine – but … it’s not the same as it was. One of my favorite features of the old setting was that the long sides of the trapezoids on the side stones were the same length as the long sides of the ring … so it almost looked like it was one stone.
In this new setting, they used smaller traps (I’m not saying they are not the same ct weight, just that they look different) so it looks more like a conventional 3-stone ring. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s not what it was. I looked at this ring 100’s of times a day, I know exactly how it was, and this is not the same.
I’m really upset, and I want to go back and have them fix it. I know he was trying to suprise me, but I’m also sort of upset that he went without me to pick it up – it’s tough for us to find a time to go together. My Darling Husband says that they did the best they could and that we should just go to another jeweller and pay again, if that’s what I really want.
