Hi fellow bees! Long-time lurker, first time poster 🙂
Just a warning that the following paragraphs might be kind of gory for some people.
I had an accident with a broken door frame in October. I ended up getting a 4-inch splinter stuck in my shin, and it went pretty deep in there (didn’t hit bone, thank goodness!). I got it removed, but the wound itself wasn’t healing, so I went to a wound-care center and they scooped out the bad stuff, and stuck me with a wound vac! If you don’t know what that is, it’s a 3-lb machine with a long tube attached to the wound (no needles, just a sponge inside and a tube attached to my skin with a special film). It’s designed to “suck” out the bad stuff. I have to carry this machine around 24/7.
I can’t get the wound site wet and/or sweaty; therefore I am unable to exercise enough to lose weight! I’ve been trying to weight lift chest and arms, but the instant I feel myself breaking a sweat, I stop. I am trying to follow the doctor’s instructions to a T so it heals faster (I don’t even care about a scar, as long as the actual wound is healed. I have a long dress so I know it won’t show up in pictures or anything).
Since I have been unable to exercise, I’ve gained about 10 lbs so far. I’ve been tracking my food intake, so I don’t go over calories all that often, but it’s very frustrating to gain weight and be unable to do anything about it! I think the entire office at the wound-care center knows my wedding date is May 11 (the nurses try to make me talk about wedding stuff when they are changing the vac, which can be painful), and they have told me that the vac would be off by then (my options were either to have the vac for a few months, or pack the wound with gauze every day for more than a few months). But what do I do in the meantime? This is very frustrating!
I had to get “special permission” to take off the vac for my first wedding dress fitting this Saturday (I’m going to pack it with gauze for the weekend).
Thanks for reading!

Sorry to hear you’re having to deal with that but hope it helps things to heal faster! Enjoy your dress fitting – I’m sure that the staff will be happy to discuss options to make sure you feel comfortable in a well-fitted dress on the day 🙂 Don’t stress!

That sounds horrible! It’s great that you don’t have to have it for your dress fitting though! Have you tried just eating more vegetables? If you’re filling up more on those you will likely consume less calories.

I’m so sorry that happened to you 🙁 Keep on trying to follow instructions to heal more quickly, as difficult as that may be.
I know you mentioned that you’re tracking calories, but are you tracking where those calories are actually coming from? Like, 2000 cals of twinkies might look a little different than 2000 calories of chicken breasts and veggies.
Try MyFitnessPal- it is free, they have a mobile app, and it will actually break down your nutrients for you (so you know the breakdown of fat/carbs/protein).
Eat clean! No processed foods, no prepackaged foods, no fast food. Eat your calories, don’t drink them- nix the cream & sugar in your morning coffee, skip soft drinks, check the serving size on juices.
Swap out highly refined carbs (white rice, potatoes, or pasta) for a whole grain variety. Eat at least a little protein with every snack and every meal- the protein takes longer to break down, so you won’t get blood sugar spikes followed by blood sugar crashes. It’s called the glycemic index- definitely google that if you aren’t already familiar with the idea.
I hope your wound heals quickly! Hang in there, and you’ll be back to exercising in no time! Between now and then, focus on cleaning up your diet and hopefully you’ll at least be able to maintain and not gain 🙂

@merrgan: Maybe you need to cut back on what you’re eating. Weight loss is about 80% diet. Gaining 10lbs in 2 months while “dieting” is a huge problem. Do you follow a program? Weight watchers may help in this situation.

Oh wow… see I had just created an account to vent and didn’t realize that anyone had replied!!
I got the vac off in late February and my weight was actually the same as when I had started. I was so afraid that I was going to gain lots of weight!! But i’ve been exercising and eating better since then and my dress still fits 🙂
Thanks for the support everyone 🙂
