Well, depends on how old you are and what style you go for (also how casual your work environment will be). I’m 25 – I get most of my work clothing from NY and Company, Express, and Ann Taylor LOFT. Lately, NY and Company has been my fave 🙂

can you get something you already have altered? It probably would be a cheaper option than buying a whole new wardrobe. If you do go shopping opt for the basics. A nice white shirt and a knee length black skirt or black pants and a fitted jacket. (I bought a really cute suit from Target of all places for 1/4 the price of one from a name brand fashion store. I get almost all the clothes I wear from GAP outlet, plain shirts/cardigans, etc. I get all of my pants from NY&Company…their work pants are great!

I was in the EXACT same position last month! Out of the blue, I got a call for an interview. During the past five months of unemployment I lost three pant sizes (really trying to slim down for the wedding – nothing major, size 12/10 to a size 6). So I had absolutely no clothes for the interview! I even tried on some of the dresses I had that I could get away with wearing a suit jacket over – nothing fit! It looked like I was a five year old playing dress up in my mother’s clothing.

Right after, I made my Fiance go with me that day to buy a new suit. It ending up costing a pretty penny, but I knew if I could land the job that it would be worth it and I could treat myself to a whole new wardrobe!

I ended up getting the job (yay!) and will be starting in the middle of next month. So I need to do some serious shopping! I’ve been frequenting Anne Taylor and the Loft, Banana Republic, J. Crew (though it’s really more casual), and major department stores (Macy’s and Nordstrom).

AT and BR have great websites – check out the SALE sections.

Good luck to you!!!! Fingers crossed.

I really like Kate Spade (if I was rich, all my clothes would be from there), JCrew and Bannana Republic. I think they all make nice work clothes, although they’re pretty conservative which matches what I do.

Most of my work clothes come from LOFT, Banana Republic, and Express.  I mostly get nice pants from Express, and mostly tops and dresses from Banana and LOFT.  I drive the hour to the Banana Republic outlet and shop there.  Last time I went I got 2 tops and a dress for $15.

I love Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft! Everything is very professional but also cute and fits well. I find the sizes run really big, though, so definitely check out the measurements!

@MM423:  I definitely agree on the sizing.  I usually wear a XS or S in tops, and I have to get an XXS there.

I like Banana Republic and The Limited for dress clothes. I like something that is stylish, but conservative as well.

@Linz1231:  Seriously! I usually wear a 6 but 6s there are always falling off–I’ve even bought skirts that are size 2, which is absurd. Their vanity sizing is out of control…what do actual size 2s wear there? 000? Other than that, I love their stuff.

I like the Limited. Their sizing is pretty uniform and on clearance the clothes are downright cheap.  Plus they hold up forever.  They’re trendy without being too much for work, and they’re really comfortable.

I like all the stores PP have mentioned, but my personal favorite for work clothes is White House Black Market. Their stuff is expensive at regular price, but they have great sales. I once got a $250 suit for $90, and a $170 dress for $50.
