I don’t know what it is about it, it feels pretentious or like I’m flaunting my relationship status when I refer to my SO as my Fiance. More often then not I just use my FI’s actual name or call him my bf when referencing him in public.
Am I the only one?? What do you call your FI/ DH/ SO when talking about them to other people?

How long ago did you get engaged?
I despised it at first, but it definitely grew on me!

beachbumm105: You could always say “betrothed” 😉
We’re planning on a long engagement and using ‘fiancé(e)’ for that long feels weird. We both just use “partner” most if the time. It’s drier and more formal than ‘boyfriend’, which can mean ‘we met in study hall and we reached 2.5 base at Kelly’s party and we hold hands in the hallway’ or ‘we own a house and have three children and are celebrating fifteen years of life together next month.’

beachbumm105: I feel like this too – like I am just fishing for congratulations and attention each time I refer to my “fiance”, even though I’m not…I actually hate talking about wedding planning, haha. I can’t wait until I can call him my husband in four months.

FantasticFawn: yes! seems so attention seeking to me – not that I’d think that about others. I stick with boyfriend mainly

I use the word fiancé on here but call him my boyfriend or by his name anywhere else.
I’m indifferent to the term, he’s the one that hates it.

I loved saying it and hearing myself referenced in that way. I wasn’t fishing for anything, just excited.

Me too! Haha me and Fiance always talk about this. It makes me cringe but I’m not sure why. I’m never sure what to call him haha.

I totally get what you’re saying– it does sound a bit pretentious! But in the end, I sort of take the “if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…” approach. He’s my fiance, and I’m happy and proud of that fact. I think it’s nice to have a word that reflects that he’s going to be a more permanent part of my life, too.
I actually referred to him as my boyfriend at work once after getting engaged, and my (very sweet) coworker practically shouted “YOU MEAN FIANCE!!!” because she was excited for me. So yes, it’s an odd word, but I’ve found that for every person who rolls their eyes at it, there’s someone who’s happy that I get to use it.

beachbumm105: Aside from Weddingbee, I never used the word fiance. I felt the same way about it.

hmm i never thought of this! I kinda like the IDEA of it, but I do feel wierd saying it in public. Def feels like I’m fishing for compliments. But it’s hard when I’m introducing him! I cant just be like Hi, this is my Patrick. lol i avoid having to say it.

I could never say it with out a fake french accent because it sounded silly and pretentious to me too!

beachbumm105: i hated it as well!! I thought i was the only one. We were engaged for 1yr 3months and i didnt use it for maybe 1st 6 months. People would rag on me and say he put that nice ring on your finger and you still call him boyfriend!… I felt very pretentious. I love the word husband and either use that or spouse when refering to him now.
Sometimes when i would say it i would jokingly use a fancy accent.lol. thats how i felt when saying it!
