UK-bee:  I’ve seen it used for both fiancé and future intended. The board abbreviation list refers to  “fiance.”

The phrase “future intended”  never made sense to me since  you are “intended” to wed now and in the future you will be wed, not “intended.”  And if it’s meant as “future, intended” that seems just a little redundant.

gloworms:  Same! He’s my fiance, so that’s what I call him.

I don’t really get why the fact that it’s French makes it sound pretentious to people. Do all French words sound pretentious then?

While I can see how some people might be uncomfortable with the word, I am not sure there is any better alternative. Boyfriend or Best Friend sounds temporary and like there is no intent to get married; partner sounds like you have decided to be together forever but to forego marriage. “My man” would strike me as a woman in a hoop skirt sighing with a Southern accent (or a line in a porno). I usually just used his name, though I don’t have that big an issue with fiance.

Haha, I’m actually the opposite. I like the term fiance but I HATE HATE HATE the term ‘boyfriend’. Like with the heat of a million suns.

weddingmaven:  THIS! This is why I hate “FI” and try never to use it. So redundant!

I also kind of hate “fiance,” and I tend to use “husband to be” or “Justin.”

weddingmaven, UK-bee, and marriedtopizza:  I always thought it was F****** Idiot. That’s how I’ve been reading it in every post for the last year.  I’ve only seen it used to refer to a man, after all, never a woman.

No? That may change the meaning of a few old posts.

We’ve been engaged for 5 months and I still fucking hate the word.

I feel like the biggest wanker saying it even just in my head….

I called him “my almost husband” because I HATE. Fiancé. But bf just sounds so immature for where we are in life, esp when you pay bills together. Luckily we only had a 6 month engagement.

beachbumm105:  I can totally relate! I feel like I’m bragging, and I can’t stand braggers myself, so why would I want to BE one?! I usually call him my boyfriend or just by his first name as well, and hope people assume my fiancé is who I’m talking about. ☺️
