So I’ve been all excited all week because we’ve been getting all our reply cards back. Well, the mail came today and I had two returned invitations with a big god awful red stamp saying “This piece is non-standard mail – 20 cents surcharge required”
UHHH, NO. Every invitation is exactly the same, meaning the same weight, and all others were delivered without a problem (hello – we’ve been getting the reply cards all week!)
Now I need to re-send these two, but wait, I have NO extra envelopes. I worked my butt off printing them all pretty and they ruined these two with their big ugly stamp. Not to mention I’m all out of custom stamps. Now I have no idea what I’m going to do.
I hate the USPS! Sorry for the rant!
RIP pretty envelopes 🙁

It looks like the envelopes are square, which does mean that they cost $0.20 more to ship. Did you take them in to ask how much they would be before you mailed them? It is really stupid that they don’t always enforce the rule (seems like it should be always or never right?) but this is a pretty common problem unfortunately.

They look wonderful, but I say just try and find 2 extra envelopes, they might not be the perfect size, and just use regular stamps, To tell you the truth I doubt those 2 people will care!

Why don’t you just add stamps to the existing envelopes and resend? If you’re worried about the red stamp, you could cover it with a regular white label, but honestly, I think it’s fine. The invites still look really pretty 🙂

@MrsMaine: I’d be frustrated too if other invitations were mailed without a problem, but these two were. So ridiculous.

@CorgiTales: I did take them in, and was assured that .44 cents was sufficient and they enforce .64 cents it if it’s 6.25 x 6.25. Mine is 5×5. Who knows if that’s even true. But then they deliver 95 of them fine, but 2 they return?
I don’t get it.

@MrsMaine: You can just email me my invite 🙂 Can you get envelopes from the card section of CVS?

@MrsMaine: that is super frustrating then. they need to train their people better!! i hate the post office. The reasoning i’ve heard for the .20 surcharge is that when mail comes in it gets sorted by a machine and a computer reads the addresses off of the cards to sort them into where they need to go. Somehow the machine is able to sort things so that they are always sitting with the longest side down so that the computer can read the address. With square envelopes you get a 50/50 chance that they will be facing the right way to get through the machine, and if they don’t get through the machine because the address is facing the wrong way then they need to be hand sorted, and that is why there is a .20 surcharge.

@SoontobeMrsA: Will do girly! I’m thinking that or Staples. Hopefully I can find something square to fit the invite. If not, I’ll have to order a few more from the website, which is fantastic since if you don’t buy them in bulk they’re $4 each!
@CorgiTales: Makes sense, I guess, but you would think they would have a better way to deal with this. This is 2011 isn’t it? FI’s dad is a mailman, wait till I unleash my wrath on him, haha!
At least my mom works with one of the women whose invite got returned. Although it’s an etiquette no-no, she said she’d just bring it into work for her tomorrow. So now at least I only have to deal with one. Ugh!
