I work in a very male dominated workplace, and one of the guys in the electric shop likes to call me “sweetie”. In fact, that’s what he called me on the phone this morning. I know he doesn’t mean anything – the man is 50 if he’s a day.
So I got slightly PO’d, and mentioned something to a foreman in my shop. And now he is teasing me.
Now, I don’t get ruffled by the crass jokes, the vulgar language, and the profanity around here. But I just get so rankled when I get called pet names! I have a name! Cubicalmouse! 🙂
Anyone else experience this?

Uh yeah, I’m the accountant an an electrical engineering lab. The lone female surrounded by men. I often get referred to as the secetary, sweeatheart, hon, or simply “the woman.” It’s the only thing that bothers me, not the crude and offensive babble I listen to all day.

I had a surgeon who used to call me honey, until I said to him one day ” Dr.So and So, I am not your honey. Furthermore I likely never will be, so I would appreciate it if you call me Jane or Nurse Doe in the future”. He never called me honey again.
You have to be assertive but be direct with the person involved. Complaining to someone else won’t work.

I worked in a male related field and I was known as “Roxee” (the only other girl was Kari, her real name) nobody called me anything else…. I guess I MADE it known in a way that they knew not to call me anything else! LOL

@misspeanut: “The woman”??? I would get soooo ticked if someone called me that!
@julies1949: I didn’t expect anything to heppen… The foreman just asked, “Hey Cubicalmouse, why do you look upset? Oh? Someone called you “sweetie”? And you are upset? What if I accidently call you “hon”? Are you going to get upset with me?”
And so for about an hour he called me “hon”. I threatened his candy privileges and he laid off.
I swear, these men are like children!!!

@rubyred605: Hah, yeah. “Woman” got shot down pretty quickly, and it’s pretty rare that it happens any more.
Really, it’s annoying, but it’s such a small company (only 20 people), and I just tease them right back. :p
