As long as it’s communicated beforehand (so they know that they should eat dinner/lunch themselves) then I see nothing wrong with it!

If that’s what you want, it’s just fine.  You don’t HAVE to feed people.  I would suggest making sure your wedding is not at a normal meal time – 2pm ceremony, finish everything before 5.  Maybe have some light nibbles available – some mini pretzels (the baked kind, not the kind from a chip bag) and fancy mustard, or something you can feed everyone a taste of for a couple hundred bucks.

I think it’s acceptable for an afternoon reception, but not for an evening reception. Basically, it would need to be between 1 & probably 3:30 pm. Anything earlier and later and you should probably serve a meal.

Also make sure your guests are aware that its cake & punch only.
