I HAVE NOTHING TO DO – ARGH!!
I started this job a little over a month ago, and the first few weeks were busy for the company, the hours were long though I still didn’t do a lot because I’m a woman (that story is in this post).
I got to speak to my boss and he did say that he’d like me to have a more independent role but at the moment, from our monthly meeting, it’s clear that I am still the go between. My skills aren’t necessarily honed, but I am a bit of a jack of all trades, more than my colleagues anyway. Fine, sure. I’m still attached to one department and it being December and all, the rest of the department are on leave until next year. (Had a month of annual leave and time in lie that HAD to be taken before the end of the year). I offer to help others but still there’s not much to do.
One day I did come in at 9, and by 9.15 I was told I was going on site at 10am, which was fine but I had plans that evening. I don’t know what time we were supposed to finish (no one communicates) but I stayed an hour until after the minimum hours I am contracted then had to leave. I felt AWFUL since everyone else had stayed. And I had to explain myself to 3 people. But what the hell am I supposed to do? Technically I am on a six day a week flexitime but normally operate a 5 day week Monday to Friday. Meaning I could have to work Sundays, but when am I supposed to get notice for working outside the standard 9am-6pm as outlined in my contract? 45 minutes?
My boss, very kindly, said I could have Tuesdays and Thursdays off because there isn’t much to do but I still spend the other three days mindlessly browsing the web. I have an hour for lunch, I sometimes take 90 minutes just to get some stimulation. I took 2 hours plus with one of the more senior members of staff once (apparently that’s fine).
I’m leaving at 5 today, it’s a work do tonight, starting at 6pm, 30 minutes away from the office. How I am supposed to get there on time, no idea. As I say, most people are on leave.
To top it off my boss told SO (who is one of my company’s clients) that he was extending my probabation period for another month so I can “prove myself”. Nice of him to tell me.
I know I need to speak to my boss again, but holy cow. Seriously? And I know I shouldn’t complain, I’m getting paid to do nothing.
