So since we are getting married in Mexico, and my passport expires mid 2017, I have to renew it at least 6 months before we travel. My travel agent said that she heard a rumor, and didn’t know it’s validity, that if you get married within a year of renewing your passport that they don’t charge you the normal fee of getting a a new passport. Does anyone know anything about this? We are both curious!

What country are you from?

Yes, I did not have to pay for a replacement passport after I got married and changed my name because I had gotten it renewed within the past year.

I know it stinks! Our honeymoon was in a different country so I had to get a new passport with my maiden name :/

I’m assuming you’re in the US? It’s certainly not a “rumor” and I’d sort of expect a travel agent to know this kind of stuff. Its right there on the US Passport .gov site that if you update your information within a year of renewing your passport you can get a new one at no charge.

That what I was told too. I had to renew mine 2 months before the wedding. UGH! But the lady who did our Marriage Certificate (also a family friend) told me that I’d be able to get a new passport with my new name if it’s within a year. I’m still working on the first parts of changing my name, so I haven’t done the passport yet – but she wouldn’t lie so I’m banking on it to be true! 🙂

yes, not a rumor, it is true. make sure you do it with a year of renewing your passport.

it’s definitely true, but make sure you do it within that year! I was just over an had to pay all over again. Kind of annoying.

What kind of travel agent are you using that they don’t know this kind of stuff? That, to me, is the most concerning thing here.

I had to renew my passport two months before my wedding. I wasn’t planning on traveling or anything, but I don’t have my drivers license (due to my anxiety and panic disorder it is best I don’t drive) so I needed it to be current as it’s my only government issue photo ID…and it HAS to be valid when filing for your marriage licence. The people at the passport office said there was no discount to change it to my married name before it expires…HOWEVER, if I were to travel, so long as my borning pass has my maiden name on it I can still use it. I’ve been married over a year and still haven’t needed it. I’ll renew it when it expires with my married name then.
