What an idiot!  I’ve never had someone say that to me but I’ve had clients say stuff like “how can you live with yourself?” and “how do you sleep at night?”  It’s especially frustrating because all I’m doing is trying to get them to pay their damn child support.  It’s not my fault they failed at having an intact family. ugh.

Don’t take it personally I guess? I don’t know, I was a waiter for many years and I’d hear horrible stuff said to my face all the time (“I hated my food the chef must be a moron! Why don’t drinks come with free refills this place is ridiculous! It’s my birthday why don’t I get a free meal, I demand to speak with a manager!”). It’s just the joy of being out in the work world, all you can do is ignore it.

I worked at a call center in high school where I dealt with customers trying to get their medication for their very serious illness’ (think HIV, AIDS). For this program our customers were being denied their meds at their current pharmacy and being asked to switch to a mail order pharmacy. As you can imagine customers would get extremely angry over this. These are obviously a necessity and not something to be playing around with. I once had a customer so upset that he said “I hope you get AIDS and die so then you would know what I feel like.” Could you believe this job made me cry many nights?

I think people need to take the time to think about the fact that there is always a human being receiving that nasty phone call or e-mail. I worked retail for years and had so many nasty comments thrown at me every day despite the fact that I was always cordial and respectful. I understand people getting frustrated, but have a little tact!!

I work for the corporate office of a popular retail chain. We get tons of emails like that. There are websites and FB pages dedicated to “I hate (my company)”. 

I once had a store give a customer my personal extension which is a gigantic no-no (I’m not customer service). This guy pretty much tore me a new one because his card was declined but the bank was holding his money. He called me every name in the book and made references to my “minimum wage job” (um… I’m an auditor). After about 10 minutes of him just not understanding what I had already dumbed down to the level of a kindergardener, I hung up the phone. This was all because his card declined in a transaction for $4.82.
