- Wedding: September 2013
It’s taken me a whole 5 days to get around to getting the pictures from my camera onto my computer but I’m ready to share my ring pics and proposal story.
My Fiance is in the Royal Navy and had been away at sea for the past month. He had already told me that he had designed a ring for me, that it was being made and that he would probably be proposing this month. (The fact that he told me so much may have had something to do with the fact that I was not good at waiting!) As a result I had actually put a poll up on the Weddingbee waiting board asking when people thought he would propose. As my parents were scheduled to be visiting us and he had always said he wanted to do it in private, just the two of us I wasn’t expecting it to be that weekend. That option got no votes on the poll which helped to convince me not to expect a proposal, BUT he surprised me by popping the question on Saturday morning. However, thats not really where the story starts as there were some sneaky behind the scene arrangements that I didn’t know about….
Apparently all last week he was emailing both of our parents to try to arrange the proposal. Originally he had wanted to take me on one of my favourite walks near my parents house and propose at some rocks where there is a gorgeous view. However, my schedule for the next few weeks is pretty busy and then he is away again so he realised that if he stuck to that plan we wouldn’t be getting engaged until at least mid-July as we don’t have the time to travel until then. After several different plans he decided he just wanted to do it asap as he just couldn’t wait any longer. However, this required the ring which was still at the jewellers a 4 hour drive to the north to be transported down south to where he lives.
His parents offered to collect the ring, make the drive and then meet up with him outside the dockyard when he got off the ship in the morning. He had asked me not to come to the dockyard but to wait with the car at the ferry he takes to get home. However, his mum and dad were really worried I would try to surprise him at the dockyard so were waiting with their hoods up ‘so I wouldn’t recognise them and guess what was happening’. Their sneaky tactics were unecessary as I did as I was told and was there to collect him from the ferry. He seemed his usual self and we just chatted as we normally would on the drive back to the flat. I walked into the flat first and put the keys down on the table and he said my name and when I turned around he was there down on one knee with an open ring box in his hand and he asked me to marry him! We hadn’t even turned the lights on yet but he said he was just so desparate to do it that he just couldn’t wait! He had kept the ringbox in his hand inside his pocket the entire time since his parents had given it to him and while we were in the car and even though he seemed so cool and relaxed he said he was really nervous on the inside!
After I stopped giggling in disbelief I managed to say yes and then we both giggled and smiled a lot and he told me that both of our parents were nearby (I wasn’t expecting my parents until later that day) and that we should go meet them. We all met up with lots of hugs in a nearby cafe, then went back to the flat and drank bubbly all afternoon. It turned out my mum had already booked a table in a lovely restaurant for us all that evening. We are both close to our parents and I am in the very lucky position that I really get on well with my future in laws and they all get on with one another too so it was lovely to be able to share our special day with them. My mum was especially excited as Fiance and I have already been together for 8 years so she has been waiting for a long time to start helping to plan the wedding!
I really really love my ring, we had gone to look at rings together a couple of times and talked about different things that we liked but just couldn’t find ‘the one’ in the shops. I feel so special that he designed my ring with his family jeweller and that I am the only person in the world with a ring exactly like this! I particularly love the side view! Its exactly what I wanted even though I didn’t know it myself!
