That sounds weird.  I’ve had people call to set up phone interviews but never on the spot phone interview.

@MrsWe:  Yup, I was called for the job I currently occupy and asked a few questions, mainly off my resume. Then they set up an in person interview.

This happened to me yesterday, actually. She called me and asked just a few questions and then asked me if I was able to go through with the phone interview right then, which I said yes, and that was that, lol. I haven’t really had a company do that before though.

I am in recruiting and I do that all the time. It’s a way to gauge if the person is enough of a fit to bring into the office to meet the team without just scheduling an interview blindly and wasting the person’s time. I do ask “do you have time to speak freely now” before I dive into my line of questions, though.

It’s apparently pretty common. It’s only happened to me once though, and since they contacted me when I was in the middle of a volunteer shift, I was able to put it off until the next day and had time to prepare. It was a real nightmare of mine though. I don’t do well on the spot.

@MrsWe:  This happened to me too! It was a local company, I figured they were just going to set up a time for an interview. But he just started asking me questions! I bombed that interview & knew it while we were having it. I couldn’t think or focus. I was at work too, so I was trying to focus on my tasks & the phone rang loudly & I couldn’t go outside because it was raining. I was so happy when it was over & then felt sad because I really wanted that job!

Ugh yes. I’m generally very good in interviews, but phone interviews completely throw me off. They are definitely not one of my strong points.

@MrsWe:  yes happens to me all the time!  Psh philly recruiters.  When I actively look for jobs I purposely dont answer calls I dont recognize so that they can leave a message and I can look up what the job was and be ready when I return it

I’ve had SO many phone interviews. Most of them say “do you have a few moments for a quick phone interview?” though…I did have some call to schedule a phone interview as well. I think if I was at work I would just let them know this wasn’t the best time for a phone interview and ask if there’s a way to call them back.

ETA I hope it went well & you get a face to face!
