You really don’t have any choices other than allow him the time he needs to completely trust you again, and be 100% up front and honest with him over everything from now on. There is no magical combination of words that can be said to repair trust once it’s damaged; it just takes time and honesty, no shortcuts exist.

I would just tell him I felt stupid about dropping the iron and it got the better of me.

Lol, what she said —-> @GroovyHippieChick:

You can add it was embarrassing too… burning the carpet and all.

I would try to figure out WHY you lied. Did you get in big trouble with your parents when you made a mistake as a child? Did you have an Ex with an explosive temper? Do you have trouble not being perfect? Are you afraid that if you make a mistake your SO will not love you? Do you feel horrible and want to sink to the center of the earth when you do something embarrassing?

For me it’s all about finding why I did something, the root of it all. then I can approach the other person and say, “I lied and that was wrong. I know why I felt like I had to lie (insert here). It’s not an excuse, but now that I know the root cause, I can work on that so that this never happens again. “

Good Luck!

@LibraryBlondie:  Ok it was a very weird and dumb thing to lie about, and I guess I can see why he’s upset. What I don’t understand is why he got THAT angry about it that he immediately stormed out and left?

Just let him breathe.  He’ll probably get over it and realize that you just weren’t thinking.
