Just needed to vent on here. I lost my job last week and am really worried about finding another one…now is such a horrible time to lose your job too. I have been thinking about making a career change anyway but I wanted it to be on my terms – when i was ready! ::sigh:: I have been looking for other jobs but I haven’t seen anything that is appropriate for my background. I have always had a desire go to law school but, especially in this market, I am not convinced that it is worth all the debt. This just sucks. What am I supposed to do with myself??

Aw I am sorry 🙁 I lost my job last year but I decided to go to school for cosmetology and ended up paying for it with my unemployment check! Haha So now I have my college degree as well as a trade I can fall back on! just got a call from my old job saying they want me back so its like they gave me a paid leave lol

im so sorry girlie – i have a sister and mom in the same boat 🙁
as for the law school – unless you want to be a lawyer, its not worth the expense to go to law school. i know lots of folks who get that JD then dont use it and complain about all the loan bills. so do it if you really WANT to be a lawyer.
give yourself a bit of time to sulk though, its totally allowed.

Thanks everyone! This is so tough for me because I always considered myself a “career girl” and I loved going to work everyday. I am really worried about having a huge gap in my employment history.
@spaganya – I really want to be a lawyer, I think I would be great at it! The only thing holding me back is the amount of money it costs to go, the limited job prospects right now, and I think it would be a very difficult career to have while balancing a family. It is important for me to be home with my kids (once we have them!) until they start school and that is usually really difficult for attorneys to do. Not to mention keeping your bar membership active while you are at home with the kids. I guess in due time I’ll figure something out..

What kind of background do you have that you are looking for? Is there anything other than Law your interested in?

awww, i am so sorry to hear… i lost my job just about a year ago, and i COMPLETELY understand what you’re going through… like you, it was def a job i wanted to leave (even started looking elsewhere), but i wanted to leave on my terms… being laid off stinks…
BUT, to send some positive vibes your way… i got by for a few months on savings… and just when i thought i couldn’t make ends meet, i got hired on part-time at my current company… (working from home, half the time as my last job, and getting paid MORE!) go figure… Fiance and i found our house, we got engaged, and i was offered full-time a couple of months later!! 🙂
i kno it prolly seems like everything is just dark… but you will find a new job… and hopefully one that you’ll LOVE!
make sure you apply directly to companies! i was signed up for every job search site and the ONLY GOOD replies i received back were directly from company HR depts that i had sent my resume to!

That’s horrible, keep your head up and don’t let the stress get you down! Stay busy with volunteering in your community which by the way is a great way to network for what could possibly be your next job/career! Good luck 🙂

I’m so sorry! I lost my marketing job 11 months ago and haven’t been able to find another in our market (small city). I’m an excellent candidate for most positions I apply for but there are just SO MANY of us out there. My interviewer 2 weeks ago told me there were over 1,000 applicants for 1 position!! So if you aren’t in marketing, I suggest not going into it right now.
It’s a tricky time but there are TONS of grants for going back to school. See if you qualify for any of them!

I lost my job 2 months ago! Reading your post was like deja vu! I was ready for a change of scene, but was holding on there because of the economic situation. I was recently talking to a headhunter in my industry and he said that every position that comes up in my field has 50-100 applications. I think I’m gonna be hanging out at home for awhile.
I’ve decided to look into volunteering at least that way I don’t have a complete employment gap, and it looks like I took some initiative while looking for new work. Maybe something to consider too? Good luck! I’m sure things will start to get better soon!
