Okay, obviously incognito here in case I am just totally crazy.
So. I’m on NuvaRing, have been since last June ish. I had NO side effects really while I was on it, which is why I am now concerned. I got married in December and hadn’t had sex before then. I have been using the NuvaRing like I am supposed to, but I usually stack them so instead of 3 weeks then out one to get a period, I keep it in for 4 and don’t get a period, which my gyn said should be totally fine. So in Feb I forgot to pick up the perscription before the pharmacy closed, so I ended up getting it in about 12 hours late, however for a week when we had sex (hey it was over V-day!) we used a back-up of VCF like it says to if you put the ring in late.
So in the last month-ish, I have been more tired, get headaches ALL the time (which I never did before), randomly am dizzy/bleck feeling, my boobs grew and are tender, ANYTHING I eat gives me heartburn when I never got it before, seriously, never. And good lord I have to pee all the time now. I have a bionic bladder, I never had issues with it before but I have to get up in the night to go to the bathroom, like every hour I have to go to the bathroom during the day and I haven’t changed my water intake or anything to make this happen. Oh and emotional wreck over here. I not a cryer unless something is really upsetting but I have these crazy swings from totally great to sobbing. Not like me at all!
The biggest concerns for me at this point is that 1) holy hell, activily trying to avoid babies. 2) I have been on this exact type and dose of BC for almost a year with these symptoms (which CAN be side effects…) just showing up now. 3) If I am I am certainly nutrient deficent, I eat crap and have been working on it but not the same way you do if you are TTC 4) I have taken meds that you aren’t supposed to while you’re pregnant because I was/am fairly confident in my BC. This is all made worse by the fact I’m a nurse who knows all the birth defects that can happen by not doing what you need pre-natal/intranatally for your baby…
Mostly I just needed a place to have a moment of freak out where no one would judge me (hopefully) and not be connected to my real life if (I hope) I am being a crazy woman. This is the third week on my NuvaRing so it is coming out and hoping that I get a period… but if not I don’t know what I’m going to do!!
Sorry that was long, I just needed to let out my inner panic.

@preggoeggo: I feel like you’ve done everything right. I’ve missed days with nuvaring and been okay. You can always pull it out early and give yourself a break too.

Can you go get a test at a 24 hour pharmacy?
@preggoeggo: If you’ve been having symptoms for a month you should be well into the point where it would show up on a test. I would go directly to the store and pick one up just for peace of mind!

Take a pregnancy test. It will either confirm your fears or make you feel better. I hope that whatever happens you are okay and that you have a good support system! *sends hugs*

even with birth control there is still a chance of getting pregnant( I know ALOT of ppl on BC that have gotten pregnant) . I would get a pregnancy test so you don’t have to continue to stress about whether you are or arn’t. I hope everything works out for you.

I thought about going to get a test but will the NuvaRing affect the test? Since it IS hormones… I’ve been thinking about going to get a test for a couple days, but I’m not sure I want to know if it really is true. I don’t graduate till December and a baby throws HUGEE kinks in all future plans. Isn’t it best to take the test first thing in the morning?

I am SO sorry, prego scares (if you are actively trying to prevent) are the worst! I am totally paranoid about things like this so I keep pregnancy tests around just for peace of mind. Take a test!

I agree with PPs. Take a deep breath, check out a HPT, and go from there. I know that panic- we’d been using 2 forms of BC and I still totally missed a period…it will drive you batty! Know that you’ve got TONS of resources and help if you need it, but don’t let the “what ifs” make you crazy…go test!
ETA- yes, ‘first urine’ is the best for testing, but you can always buy a 2 or 3 pack and try one now to ease your mind and then do a double check in the AM. I’ve also read on the boards that a digital is more accurate than a line (or at the very least, a lot easier to decipher when you’re really nervous vs is that a line *squint*).

I took the pill 100% perfectly and still got pregnant. Even taking Nuvaring perfectly, a few women out of 100 – every year – get pregnant. So, it’s entirely possible.
If you’re already having symptoms like that, you’re far enough along to test. Those are the exact symptoms I had when I was pregnant (which I was also in denial about, since I considered it “not possible” to get pregnant when taking birth control perfectly)

@preggoeggo: No, nuvaring is not the pregnancy hormone. It will not effect the test.
@preggoeggo: I don’t think the hormones will change anything, as people on oral contraceptives would still have to test if they didn’t get there period etc.
If your pregnant, it will show up anytime of the day. Concentrated urine is better aka waiting a while/holding pee. If its too early you wont see anything, but my guess is that you want to know now because you don’t want to continue on taking meds and wearing nuva ring if you have a dead on positive.

@preggoeggo: Shouldn’t effect it. Preg Tests pick up HCG (i think, correct me if I’m wrong) and nuvaring is a different horomone

Alright, first off take a BIG deep breath. As a nurse I am sure you know that stress can do crazy crazy things to your body so try not to freak out too much prematurely. I have had many of the symptoms you are talking about due to high stress and some simple vitamin deficiencies. Gah i suck at spelling this evening, forgive me. Anywho when you can try to get into your doctor to have some tests (including pregnancy) done and put your mind at ease! Or even better get an at home test or three to see what comes up. Hope all goes well for ya 🙂

The NuvaRing will not affect the pregnancy test. The pregnancy test is looking for human chorionic gonadotropin, which the NuvaRing does not contain.
Edit: Even if it turns out you’re not pregnant, perhaps you should start taking folic acid and prenatals anyway, so that if you ever have another scare, you won’t have to feel guilty about not being on vitamins?
Edit 2: beaten on the hCG lol
