ugh I feel for you. I REALLY do.  In the past 4 years I have sunk well over 5 grand into my vw beetle.  I got the quote for the new muffler and brakes to be almost 2 grand.  I said thats it and bought a new Honda civic.  The work isnt going to be as cheap as a chevy or a ford but not nearly as costly as a vw and they do go forever.  My grandma and step sister each had theirs for like 10 years!  Good luck on the car search and give your jetta a swift kick on the way out the door!

Stay away from VW, I’d go with Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. I have a 2011 Camry (and a 08 Ford Explorer) and love both 🙂 Good luck!

I have been researching new vehicles toyota & honda are the most reliable brands. Maybe something like a honda civic or toyota corolla for a car. A toyota rav-4 or honda crv for an suv. You could also try buying a “car buyers guide” magazine and they will usually have ratings and common problems for all vehicle types so you can compare and see which are most reliable.

I second Subaru. I have actually had really good experiences with Chevy. I had a 97 Cavalier for almost 7 years and had to replace the battery, which is obviously pretty normal, and I think I replaced the serpentine belt. Regular oil changes of course and brake pads/stuff that generally wears down. I had to replace the power window motor, too. Otherwise, it was really reliable. The steering column just went so I had no power steering and we decided given the age of the car and that I really need all wheel drive anyway, we decided to trade it in rather than fix it. But honestly, I could not complain. If I were looking for a car, I would definitely consider a Cruze or Cobalt. I ended up getting an 07 Equinox because we got the best deal on it, though I almost changed allegiances to Nissan for the styling.

The biggest thing I was surprised by was budget. Not many people realized it, but after the Cash for Clunkers program, used car prices skyrocketed because it reduced inventory so much.

We replaced our 14 year old car with a Nissan Sentra and couldn’t be happier… It’s big enough for my giant Fiance to drive every day and yet small enough to not have any issues with street parking.  It’s comfy for me to drive as well, and the ride is so smooth!!!

We have a 2007 Elantra and it’s a great car. We’ve yet to have any issues with it that weren’t covered under warranty and it has almost 80k miles on it already (bought it brand new). It gets good gas mileage (35mpg or so) and it looks great. After we bought our car they dropped the price on them by like $6000. The new elantras are awesome but a little more than you want to spend. You could easily pick up a 2008-2009 within your budget, though.

I don’t care what anyone says about hyundais, ours has been a great car for us.

Nissan! We have an Altima but Sentra is a slightly less expensive option. I bought it used about 3.5 years ago and have only done routine maintenance.

@AnneTossy: Lol, I was feelin’ a change.

@Jaynee: They definitely have stepped up in recent years. Our loan will be paid off next summer but we’re planning on driving this sucker until it explodes!

I have a toyota yaris and I love it! It gets great gas milage (close to 40mpg) and i think its pretty cute looking. Its an ’07 and I looked how much it is worth recently and its around 7k, but brand new they are only about 15k, so they really don’t lose vaule too quickly. So far the only repairs i’ve had are because I got in an accident. I got it in ’06 so its 5 years old this spring.
