I would plan it as if I were planning a birthday or graduation party.  Light snacks, a couple of toasts and call it a night.  Nothing to extreme – you don’t want to upstage any weddings.  Personally I think they are unecessary, but it’s not my decision!  Good luck!

we had a bbq for our engagement party. My Future Mother-In-Law welcomed me to the family and gifted us some toasting glasses for the wedding. We served sangria, cheeseburgers, salads, and cake. It was more of a socializing kind of thing to get everyone in the same place since Darling Husband had been in Iraq for 8 months…

Food, a little wine–what more could you need? =]. You could always throw it cocktail style….appetizers, mini desserts (frozen cream puffs are easy!) and a martini bar. But cheeseburgers are easy, too.

You could theme it and do a taco bar with margaritas too.

My engagement party was at this Historic Mansion and we just had like an Italian Deli Cater big long sandwhiches and Chicken Parm, Chicken Marsala etc.  It had a really cool outdoor area where we put the “bar” which was Beer, Wine and Soda, in like big beverage bucket type things.  We had like a lemon theme going so everything was white and yellow (very summery it was in the summer) and we used dollar store vases filled with lemons as the centerpeices.  It was really laid back and casual and no assigned seating or anything like that.  It worked for us because we dont really have a big enough place for a BBQ but I do love the BBQ idea.  I also think a heavy appetizer and wine and beer type party would work perfectly.  How many people are you planning on bringing?  You could also look into having it at a park or the beach even and have like a nice picnic almost if it not a lot of people.
