Okay Hive! I am reaching out to those crafty ones among us for help with ideas on how to handle a special project! I am a huge fan of the Muppets and am planning on having a nod to them at my ceremony by creating simple Muppet-style butterflies on rods for guests as favors.
Many were made for Jim Henson’s memorial service and you can see them in action at this link at 1:17 (however the ones for his service were much larger and more detailed than the ones you would see in the backgrounds of the tv shows/sesame street, but you get the same idea):
Originally I tried to find a suitable foam/felt type fabric but everything came off too stiff. While browsing for matierial ideas at Michaels, I bought floral crafting wire and multicolor fabric petals from the wedding section, figuring that an arrangement of four separate petals would accurately define a butterfly shape.
I had half success sewing them together and then to the rod (time consuming!) and about half had the look of “fluttering” when waved. If I can’t figure out another way to accomplish this, I will soldier on this way and redo the ones that are too stiff.
Does anyone have any creative ideas of how to tack these four petals together and attach them to the floral rods without sacrificing mobility of the wings?
