I am terrible at estimating time, and have no clue how to get this timeline ball rolling! My ceremony is at 1:00pm, and will take me 20-30 minutes to travel to. We’d like to do some of our portraits (myself and my groom) before the ceremony, for a little “us” time before everything gets even crazier for the rest of the day. My questions are:
- What time should I start getting my hair and makeup done?
- What time should I tell my makeup artist (a friend) to meet me?
- What time should I tell my photographer to be there? What would be a good time to start portraits?
- What is YOUR ceremony schedule like?
I’d love any help you could give, as I’m way too close to the big day and am getting a little lost!

It helps to work backwards. So the Ceremony is at 1. Travel time we having you leaving your ‘getting ready’ venue at 12:20-12:25. (You want to get there about 5 to 10 mins before the ceremony begins.) You probably want some ‘freshen up’ time before you leave so let’s have your pics (with the groom) end at 12:00. Depending on what you want for pics allow enough time, I am giving you an hour in this case. So ‘formal’ pics start at 11. Let’s have you get into your dress at 10:30-10:45. So your hair and makeup should be done by 10:15. If you want ‘getting ready’ pics, have your photographer get there around 9:45-10. Alternately, you can have your photographer do fake getting ready shots, i.e. have the makeup person pretend to be putting lip gloss on you, etc. You can do this during “freshen up” time or right after you put your dress on.
So now I have given you that big fat confusing paragraph here is a general breakdown that may work:
10 – photographer arrives
10:15- make up and hair done (have the makeup person arrive at whatever time is appropriate to get you and any other bridesmaids or whomever done, she should be able to tell you how long the appointments will be)
10:30- get in dress and accessories – you can have some bridal portraits done here
11:00- pics with the groom, bridesmaids whatever you want for pictures
12:00 go back to bridal suite to freshen up (if you want this time, if not you can push your timeline back accordingly)
12:20 – leave for ceremony venue
hope this helps!

Thanks, soccerball! This is actually VERY helpful!! I think I may use it as a general guideline while I’m trying to nail this down.
