I’m in the same boat.  I live out of state, am not religious, and am not getting married in a church.  I asked my venue for recommendations and they actually have a volunteer there (its a historical society) that is a minister! (and secular at that).

I would just ask around, message people you see on facebook that are engaged/recently married in the area– post something on weddingbee!  I saw different websites for people, but they creeped me out for some reason.

Also, I set up an interview with an event planner (that I can’t afford!) and she also gave me some recommendations via email as we set up the interview even though I won’t be hiring her…

@Taylor25:  Why not have one of your friends or relations get ordained through Universal Life Church?

@Taylor25:  I was in the same boat as you. I found a few officiants just by googling Richmond, VA wedding officiant, and decided to go with Carol Ogburn. Here’s her website: http://www.whispheringpinesweddings.net/index.html

She met with my fiance and I at a Panera and we just chatted for a bit to make sure that we were a good fit. She’ll completely tailor the ceremony to your wants/beliefs. I didn’t want a religeous ceremony at all and she’s fine with that. I highly recommend her!

Yeah, there aren’t a ton of non-denominational or non-religious officiants in Richmond. But many of the officiants around here do travel from the VA Beach and Charlottesville area (and even NoVA!). My officiant is driving in from Fredericksburg. I’d be happy to send you the info.

@THEONLYSTAR4HIM13:  legally the marriage celebrants recommended by the courts can only charge $50 plus mileage.

yes, but finding one is difficult, when I called the circut court they sent me to a automated system that did not give me any information on a marriage celebrant.

Alane Cameron Miles. She’s awesome. Fee is $500, but she puts a good deal of work into it.

We’re not getting married in a church! I wanted a scenic, beautiful outdoor ceremony! We’re using my FH’s mentor/pastor in the ARMY. He’s traveling from the Danville area, but he’s so sweet and we’re glad to have him join us!

A former co-worker of mine filled out paperwork to officiate his friend’s wedding. He got the paperwork from the Henrico County Government Bldg. The ironic part is that he doesn’t even believe in marriage!!
