Oh, I’m so sorry 🙁  I really don’t think you can ‘re-claw’ a cat.  I also don’t know if you can sue, but I would definitely have a very stern discussion (or if you’re too emotional, write a firm letter) expressing your feelings on the situation, and asking the clinic what they can do to rectify the situation (not that it even CAN be fixed…)

Also, take a deep breath, and be thankful that they didn’t accidentally euthanize your kitty.  I realize what happened to him is unfair, and not at all what you wanted to have happen, but you will get to bring him home and love him and care for him.

I’d switch vets in a heartbeat too.  This is more than just a ‘woopsies, wrong procedure!’ it is pretty negligent.  There is probably a veterinary board to whom you can report this incident.

I am so sorry to read how upsetting this is, and how upset it has made you…your emotions just transcended thru your post 🙁

First, what is done is done.  I do not believe, although I could be wrong, that you can re-claw a cat, and certainly since you seem to be a loving, caring pet owner, would understand when I say that if you could…that seems a tad cruel to me.  Putting an animal thru that again, or whatever.

Second, knowing/assuming what is done is done, I would not remain quiet about it with the vet.  Knowing you did not schedule this procedure, or sign off on it would warrant quite an uproar – if it were me anyways.  However, I would probably just demand that the procedure/hospital stay be absolutely free, reporting this to the BBB (or something like that), and then take that kitty home and love him all the same.  Pursuing a lawsuit, etc, would just cause you MANY headaches, and will cause you to live in your emotion now for far longer, I think.

Although it is against everything you believe in, many cats have it done, and live happy happy lives, maybe not even knowing they were missing to begin with?! (Not a cat person, but love them all the same!).  That does not change what happened, certainly, nor I am trying to state one way is right or wrong either…

I hope this all works out for you.  Sorry again 🙁

Wow. Wow wow wow. I’m so sorry to hear this.  I too am strictly against declawing, and would be LIVID if this happened.  FIRST THINGS FIRST, make sure they do not also ‘accidentally’ put the declawing on your vet bill!!

It wouldn’t hurt contacting a lawyer to see if there is anything you can do. Did they seem very apologetic?  I would hope they at least show some remorse about screwing up so badly. If not, I would be calling your local news channel and hanging them out to dry. And I’m not a vengeful person. But that’s terrible.

I hope your cat wasn’t an outdoor cat before. At least if he’s an indoor cat he wont’ “need” his claws as much.

Good luck, I really hope they do something, anything, to compensate you. And yes, get another vet right away.

Not that it’s going to help your kitty, but I’d also write a harsh Yelp review on the place.

Oh jeez, I think what’s done is done.  You might want to talk to a lawyer to see if you have any claims.  I’m sorry.

So you know, my cats were declawed – my parents demanded it because they tore up the house.  They were in pain for a few days, but after that they were fine.  They’re still fine now.  They don’t even know that they’re gone.  I’m sure your cat will forget this, too.  And love you just the same!

This makes me sad.  I would be so upset if they “accidently” performed the wrong procedure on my cat.

They definitely cannot undo the declaw. It goes without saying that they shouldn’t charge you for the declaw, but really they shouldn’t charge you for anything since they majorly fu*ked up. I’m not sure what you can legally do, but if they try to hold you accountable for the declaw then I’d look into it. I’m sorry this happened to you and your sweet cat.

Definitely would press the whole visit to be free. I’d put a nasty review up on their establishment and through word of mouth. Sorry you have to deal with that! This just doesn’t seem right one bit.

Fiance is a vet so I take this stuff pretty seriously. You should reach out to your state’s verterinary board and make a formal complaint against this vet.

That is completely unacceptable. I would demand that your services be free and that they offer any follow up at a discount as well. I would also take this to the press, contact any rescue or adoption agency, and spread it via social media and review sites.

You can’t undo this. Demand the ENTIRE bill be free of charge. Contact the BBB. But also there could be additional complications with this in the future- urination outside the litter box, spine problems, nails growing back (most likely everything will be ok but STILL) I would probably talk to a lawyer about it (maybe a free consulation?) because they should have to pay any future vet bills that result from this declaw.

@kansas_nurse:  I can only imagine how upset you must be. I’m sure your kitty will be fine physically INDOORS. I’m pretty sure that it is not safe to let a declawed cat outside. Unless it is in your fenced in yard (no nooks and crannies in the fence) and you are monitoring her constantly. She will not be able to defend herself against other animals. I’m so sorry!
