I went dress shopping today. As expected, it was not enjoyable. I mean, it didn’t turn out to be as torturous as it started, but still.
I went into this with an unclear idea of what I wanted, but with one thing that was certain. A tea-length dress. Period.
After assuring me that they had lots of “shorties” to choose from in many styles, whe came back empty, saying they were all sixes or eights.
So instead she and my mother started pulling full dresses, with the understanding that they could be shorted to tea-length. Everything was either too plain or too plain but also somehow gaudy or just…blegh.
Then my mom brought me this one and I loved everything about it except for the length.
I will not have a full-length dress. It isn’t “me” and it most certainly doesn’t suit our wedding. As is, this dress would throw off everything bright that I have been picturing.
It is a beautiful dress, to be sure, but I need to know your experiences, if any, with shortening a dress. Whether it was to turn it into a tea-length or because you are shorter than the dress and needed it hemmed. What are your experiences with length alterations? Was the dress still right? Did it still (or more) feel like “you”? Did it look like it was supposed to be that lenght, if you’d never seen it longer, or did it looked like something that was supposed to be longer? Do these questions make any sense? Am I just losing it?
The dress I tried on isn’t as long as this one. At the length I want, the tulle would still retain all of the beaded sections and come down about 1/2 – 3/4 of an inch (in my bare-eye estimations) below the long drop part of the satiny stuff. It would all fall exactly where I want, based, again, on my untrained eye.
Also, shoes. What color is there that stands out with a varied-hue champagne dress?
When you were trying on dresses, did you get someone to show you the dress pinned up so you could picture out? How do you justify throwing hundreds of dollars at something you can’t visualize? Should she have listened to what I needed and pinned it up for a rough look at what I would be shooting for?
