- Wedding: May 2011
‘Cause that’s what my e-ring is! (Cell phone pic, sorry.) We’re getting married in May in my hometown. His littlest brother and sister (17 and 15) seem REALLY excited about it.
Turned out he meant to ask my dad over my birthday weekend, but he couldn’t get my dad alone. So he called once he knew they were home. A little over a week later, we left for San Francisco to meet his family (On the flight, he spilled a can of bloody mary mix all over my pants and laptop bag. I was so pissed because I just finished a novel and hadn’t backed it up. Ooooops. The computer was fine, though, and our checked bag arrived so I could change at the airport. No orange and black pants.) I met his mom and most of his sibling on Monday, and met his dad last night (after a day touring his hometown, including a hike along Lime Ridge, which has a view of several towns in the area.) We went straight from his dad’s to sushi (my request.) We went to Nama Sushi and Teriyaki in Concord California. I went to the restroom (waited about ten minutes to get in), went back, we ordered, and as soon as the waitress had walked away, he said he had to ask me a question, so he got down on one knee, opened the box, asked, and then was hugged, kissed, and told “Of Course!” for what felt like at least five minutes. I then realized that I hadn’t even looked at the ring and had just tackle-hugged him. I sat there, alternately giggling and hugging/kissing him (tears came at some point, and he went “you… can’t… cry…” “This is happy, I can’t help it!”) The sushi people were great – grinning the whole time at us. And their sushi chef made me a rose out of smoked salmon and cucumber. I suppose the sushi must have been good, since I didn’t use any soy sauce. I was a little too shaky and distracted to notice much.
Afterwards, we went to his mom’s house and told his brothers and littler sister (his older sister already knew.) His oldest brother was sick and half-ways passed out and just said “Oh… ok, cool.” and went back to sleep. His little sister at first just went “OK…” then… “Wait a minute… you’re engaged?” “Yes.” “Oh…” A minute or two later, she emerged from her room. “WAIT! You’re really engaged? I thought I was dreaming!” And then she was bouncing around and hugged me. It was great. (His little brother, the one I know the best as we spent two weeks together this summer and happened to be fully awake when we got in, was doing a little jig and wandering around grinning.) His mom came in about ten minutes later, looked at my fiance, and went “You look really guilty…” “Well, sort of…” He grabbed my hand and showed her. She then poured the three of us a glass of wine, and pulled out all of their photo albums. It was great. So…
