I’m a well-paid, glorified receptionist. No, I’m not living the dream, and my boss is increasingly annoying- but I can go to school and pay my bills if I stick to a budget. I had been offered one position and turned it down- it would have been a $10,000 salary bump- but not mentally healthy. Then I went after a very unhealthy position for $15000 more than I make- it was more about reaching short-term salary goals than job experience.
I didn’t get that job- so then they offered me an “assistant compliance officer” position. Completely out of left field- and the powers that be are trying to sell me on this new career. I would be interested- I’ve been a receptionist for 3 years…. and I would stay in my position if it wasn’t for my increasingly annoying boss.
The kicker is- they offered me a 10% raise- $8,000 less than the first position I was offered. I feel like I can negotiate a bit- but I really don’t have a leg to stand on since they have low-balled me. They have already started interviews for my receptionist position- presumptuous at best. I feel like I’m getting railroaded into this, and I doubt anyone would offer me another position and maybe I’m too lazy/scared to find a job elsewhere, at least for the moment. What would you do?

It sounds like you need a change, so I’d probably take the job. You can try to make a case for an increase in salary, but if your company is anything like mine they will spin it that you are LUCKY to be given this opportunity and that should account for any gap in salary. Oooh, corporate america 😉

Update: The day got worse, as my boss called me into her office to say I was making a huge mistake, then, (her voice raising,) that I really should just be “grateful” for the opportunity, and that I was clearly “frustrated” in my position.
I ended up emailing the HR director about the innappropriate situation, because why should I negotiate terms with my own boss? Why is my boss telling me how I feel and how to run my life? How am I supposed to negotiate terms if my boss is making it uncomfortable to be in my current position?
This morning, I was able to negotiate a living salary- on next year’s budget which is completely reasonable. However, I just got the feeling that, on some level, people thought it was frivolous to negotiate terms or to say no. It is because of this belief that we make less than men, time after time. I’m completely floored by the treatment from my boss yesterday. My HR director insinuated that I was the one causing drama- when I only wanted to negotiate terms without my boss bullying me.
Did anyone else experience this?
