I signed up for a personal training contract in 2009.
The manager of the health centre of the gym promised me a personal training/nutritionist program that he wasn’t able to fullfil. The personal trainer that he assigned to me was horrible.
A few months through the contract, the personal trainer and the health centre manager were fired for sleeping with each other and lying to clients.
I went to the head manager of the gym and he cancelled my contract and waived all fees for me.
Well on Monday, my dad gets a call from the gym(he was listed as emergency contact and I have since changed my number). I called them back and the girl at the front desk said that the lady I needed to speak with wasn’t there but that there is a note on my file that says that it was all dealt with at gym level and that I don’t need to be contacted for a balance.
I was so relieved! But then I get a call back today from the lady I needed to talk to and she says that I DO owe the money! I call the gym and the manager I spoke with doesn’t work there anymore! The new health centre manager does but says I need to come in to deal with it! I call back the lady and she says that she will speak to her manager and see what she can do for me.
I am seriously so stressed because 1) I already dealt with this issue and don’t feel like having to go through it again and 2) I LOST ALL MY DOCUMENTS … to be honest… I think I may have thrown then out because I am the dumbest person on earth and I thought that the issue was dealt with so I didn’t need to keep my docs.
I am so sad. I just needed to vent to the hive.

Wow!! I hope you get it resolved!
My fiance worked for a gym for a year , and he said they are very crooked. He states he will never give them his debit card number, b/c they would double dip out of their account or would continue to charge people even after they cancelled . I am sorry this is happening!!
If you can’t get it resolved, if it makes you feel better, he says every gym around here ( urban active, fitworks, and the little ones ) have no control to touch your credit, you just can’t get another membership there until you pay your debt.

@Anniebo: Well that was one of the huge reasons that my contract was cancelled too. They went in and took out 3 payments in one month!
Not only that, but I lost my credit card once and had to change the number. I went in to give them the new number and the STUPID accounts guy put my credit card number on someone elses account and put their credit card number on my account!!!! He then had the nerve to come to my work and tell them that I owed them money! I went and showed him the paper he had given me with my info that was CORRECT and he appologized. But I felt so dumb trying to explain to my work why he was there!

- Wedding: August 2013 - An amazing non-profit retreat
I trust the gym I am with now, but the last one made me SO mad. I went in, in person to cancel when my contract was up. I physically signed forms. I ended up being charged for 4 extra months and when I called to complain I was treated so rudely and told that the guy “I supposedly” talked to had left the job months before I cancelled. Uh, no. Anyways… The best gyms are the small ones, with 2-3 staff members that you can befriend and trust.

Ya I will never deal with a gym again.
The worst thing is that I googled them after this whole thing and a bunch of threads came up saying that they are the worst gym in Ontario and that tons of people have filed consumer complaints against them.
I wish I would have read that before signing up 🙁

It will probably by okay. You don’t need to pay for a contract that you didn’t receive the services for. Be sure to tell them that your contract was discharged because the gym was uanble to fulfill it’s contractual obligations.
That is so frustrating though. I hate having to deal with the same thing twice. (or more than that!)

wow this sucks. i just recently had an issue with a company trying to hold me to a contract that they violated for not listing all the terms and then trying to hold me to them. don’t be afraid to stick to your guns and be sure to document all the key things they have said, when you talk to them, names, etc. Most of the time people will drop these things and they are counting on you to give in. DON’T!!! good luck with it all, also if you write down all you remember about it now you won’t be worried about mixing up details down the road as you continue with the process!!
