I think everyone assumed that my only sister would be my Maid/Matron of Honor.  I still didn’t mention it to each girl though.  I think the first time that I “announced” it to them was on my bridesmaid website.  I made a Facebook forum so they could all communicate, post, email, etc. since they are from all around the country.  It was at that point that I said something along the lines of “As many of you might have guessed, my younger sister Raquel is my Maid of Honor.  Please refer any questions you have regarding the events leading up to the wedding to her, as she will be orchestrating many of them.”

In your case, I wouldn’t come right out and say that you’re “announcing” so-and-so as your Maid/Matron of Honor.  Instead, just let them know in the context of other things.  If you don’t treat it as a huge deal, they won’t either.  If they get sassy and want to know why they weren’t selected, then I would pull out your MOH’s friendship resume!  We’ve known each other X amount of years, we’ve been through so much, etc.

As a side note, I think it’s so weird that the brother’s gf thinks she should be the Maid/Matron of Honor.  I mean, she might not even be around in a few months!

@SweetRose2011: Although 4 years/since 9th grade seems like a long time, I still don’t think it is, especially when you are that young.  If I had a dollar for every high school relationship that I’ve seen wither and die!  I could absolutely see a fiance, but just a girlfriend still shows that she is somewhat dispensible at this point.  I wish them the best, but the truth is that they could break up and then you are uncomfortably left with his ex as your Maid/Matron of Honor lol.  But I think your idea of just telling her that you were afraid it would be too overwhelming is a great idea.  Even if it’s not the whole reason for your decision, it’s a good one and should be sufficient for her. 🙂
