Your post made me laugh. We’re hiring full afternoon tea sets and it’s costing quite a bit -but we’ve saved by going through a smaller company.
Paper plates were a no-no from Fiance and our families. I can see why. Paper plates don’t bother me but in with china teacups it would look silly.
I bought disposable floral napkins from Paperchase and I’m going to buy my table cloths from IKEA as it comes out cheaper.

I definitely wouldn’t bat an eye at plastic, paper or compostable plates and silverware at a wedding—especially for barbeque! I literally cannot remember a single thing about the plates/glasses/flatware at any wedding I’ve ever been to. The food? Hell yes. But as a guest, I wouldn’t notice the material the forks were made out of unless someone stabbed me in the eye with one. Whatever you choose will be awesome.

I got lucky, my venue provides all china included in price per head. They have very nIce contemporary white square plates and classic glasses. If it was not included then i would ditch chair covers and rent or buy real china. In my culture disposable plates are not appropriate and considered bad taste for a wedding.

We all have our moments of wedding spending insanity. We rented (through the venue) floor length tablecloths. The venue only supplied 4-points, on Friday and Sunday nights. I figured we were ahead, since the rates for those nights were so much lower.
I bought 3 tablecloths online, for my daughter’s baby shower, at 50% off, for what I rented $$ for one for the wedding.
I didn’t fall for the charger rentals, though. Since soup was served as the first course, the venue supplied for free very nice, gold trimmed under plates. Win-win!

Costco has nice plastic china (clear and white with gold or silver piping) and they also have gold or silver metallic heavy duty plastic silverware that actually looks like regular silverware. I definitely wouldn’t rent plates especially at that price.
As far as linens go, I would keep it simple and make or purchase an overlay or runner that goes with your theme instead of renting a bunch of linens or if you can find a reasonable rental place, then you could do that as well since you are saving on the plates and silverware.

So glad I found this thread. We’re having our favorite Puerto Rican resturant cater, but they don’t offer any china rental.
