the history of my hair is a very long and eventful one… (warning this may be a long post…)
growing up, i had extremely long thick curly frizzy wild hair….always fuzzy and going everywhere! my mom wasn’t no where near a hair stylist and all the way up til around the 5-6th grade, she would comb my curls out before attempting to style it….now, as all my fellow curly gals kno, combing + curly hair = BAD IDEA!!
my hair was a ball of frizziness that no hair product could tame….nothing could keep my hair pinned down….braids ended up becoming a knot of frizz by the end of the school day…ponytails became half my hair standing up and half held back….it was very very bad…. so what did i do??
in 8th grade, one morning before school, i got up really early, took a shower, grabbed a pair of scissors. and cut. my. own. hair.
boy, was my mom P.O.’d!!!!! it was so short and uneven my mom made me stay home from school and took me to a salon to see if they could fix it. and i was grounded for a month! lol
did they fix it? well, i went from a long mane of wild thick hair past my butt to a short ball of wild thick hair that when dry, would land short of sitting on my shoulders….did not help at all!!
in high school i made it one of my main mission to learn more about my hair and how to tame it….magazines, internet searches, endless begging to my mom for her to purchase specific products….and then i discovered a way to somewhat shape my locks by finger curling them in the morning while my hair was wet….now girls, by the time i discovered this seemed-like-a-good-idea-then process, my hair had miraculously grown down to my mid-back, so dry it would land just a lil past my shoulders…..it took me close to 2 long hours every morning to sit in front of a mirror and take small sections of my hair, starting from the base of my neck and working up to the top of my head, and twirling the sections around my finger to define and shape the curls…..if you haven’t realize by now that i was obsessed with finding a way to tame my curls then i assume you at least realize that i was psycho crazy….lol did i bother to ask my mom to use her curling iron instead?? nope. for reason i somehow convinced myself that this method was by far more easier than using a curling iron….my curls looked like a wig…no lie….lol
it took me a whole year (and a lot of jokes from fellow classmates) to realize i was basically rocking a do that didnt fit me….took another year to discover the first step to finally achieving healthy natural tamed looking curls – layers!!! i had known about them but had never put two and two together – my hair + layers = GREAT IDEA!
graduation from high came with a semi-transformed ME…i was finally getting somewhere with taming my hair and it looking half decent…lol
from then until now, i have always kept it short, never let it grow past my mid-back…and i’ve gone through so many products and different ways of handling/styling it to try and achieve better looks and take control of it more effectively and i’ve come to the point where i can finally say….
i love my hair!!
yup, i have hated my thick locks since forever, and now, omg….i love it….this change of heart has happened recently…for the past month i have switched to treseme curling products and it has worked wonders!!! i combine that with a little bit of coconut oil to keep it moisturized and so it doesnt look dry and frayed….i only detangle my locks in the shower after applying conditioner and never shampoo every single day, only twice/three times a week….and the past year i’ve been letting my hair grow and it is now past my mid-pack, dried! after over a decade of it always being short, its long and beautiful and curly and most importantly TAMED!!! lol
so thats the end of my story-telling….sorry it got so long…i’ll be sure to post a pic of my lovely locks later (i’m at work right now…lol)
anyone else love their hair or have hair stories to share?? 🙂
