Let me start by saying I hate clothing shopping in general. I have fairly simple taste and generally find it hard to find what I want. So dress shopping with four moms (my mom & stepmom, his mom and stepmom) plus three bridesmaids was nervewracking! I wanted to make sure everyone had fun and oh yeah, didn’t want to spend over $500. Sounds low stress, right? Right???
A friend told me about Alyce Paris Designs which has some beautiful white formal dresses with a little bling for not much buck. This led me to a small local bridal/formal shop that carries that line. The day before my appt, the consultant called to ask about my taste. I named the dress I loved and she said unfortunately they didn’t have it and oh yes all their gowns are $1000-$3000. I was half asleep so I said ok we’ll figure it out tomorrow. I had an appt at David’s Bridal later the next day anyway so I figured we’d have a slightly awkward time at the local shop, grab some lunch and then go find a dress as David’s.
I am so glad we went to the local place first! The very proper British lady helping us seemed briefly taken aback by my budget and then absolutely determined to make it work. She had our group browse the shop grabbing dresses to total 6 for me to try and then she threw in two surprises. She insisted all her brides pick the first dress and proceeded to put me in a tight fitting silky long sheath that she chose and just did not work for me. I politely told her that it wasnt the dress for me and she was genuinely puzzled that dress #1 wasn’t my pick. She helped me into dress #2 and that was that! This was the dress my mom and I chose together and I couldn’t stop grinning in it. I tried on a few more to humor the lady and the moms and then said yes to that #2 dress which was Blue by Enzoani Auburn! It was an off the rack clearance dress (discontinued style) and it fit perfectly!!! All it needs is the train taken off (not my style) and hemming! I’m also having the neckline made into a sweetheart. Oh and it was $500!!! Champagne came out along with laser etched Team Bride glasses my best friend (bridesmaid) had made herself…and the moms started tearing up and so did I! I couldn’t believe it was that easy!!!
(Pics below are me and my mom…my career makes me very cautious about online privacy…but I promise you we’re both grinning delightedly!)
