So bees, at the moment, SO and I are living with my parents. It’s not the most ideal situation, but he can save money and finish paying off his car while I finish up at the local college before heading to another city to finish up my bachelor’s.
Right now, though, I’m not sure I’ll make it the next 2 or 3 semesters without strangling him! At the moment, he works night shift, which means he sleeps from about 1 or 2 in the afternoon until he has to get ready to be at work at 10. And 10 is usually when I’m getting ready to go to bed. So all day, it feels like I’m stuck in our room in the dark and quiet and I’m about to go out of my mind.
I would love to go out into the living room or the computer room, but we have no air conditioning in the rest of the house, and it’s August in Alabama. We have a fan in the computer room, but it seems like all it does is move around the hot air. And we can’t leave windows or doors open because we have three dogs who will jump out the first chance they get– even with us standing right there! (Locking them out of the living room does no good, since two of them can easily open all of our interior doors and roam the house as they please). So basically, everywhere in the house that isn’t a bedroom feels like a furnace.
I’m just sick of it. I have my laptop and headphones, but sometimes I want to be able to read, or clean the room, or organize the closet during the day when I have energy- but these things require light or noise, and SO gets ill when he gets woken up. Which I understand, he has to get sleep for work, but I just feel stiffled. We even have a small desk lamp with a shade, but even that is too much light apparently. I’m running out of ideas on what to do!!
At least when the weather cools off I can hang out in the rest of the house. But until then (cause it may be late September before that happens!), I have no idea what to do. Any advice bees?

I would grab my laptop and head to the nearest coffee shop! Find things to do out of the house so you feel less trapped.

@ForeverBirds: first of all can we trade? I’m in Canada and we had a long winter followed by a cold summer, I’m litterly about to turn my heat on as we speak haha
i agree with the coffee shop suggestion! Or even your library! Just somewhere outside of your house. study date with a friend at her house even? Maybe a shady spot in a park with the dogs?

Ugh, I would be trying to find somewhere else to hang out too! Like a coffee shop, mall, gym, friends house, community pool, etc.
Also, can you hang out in someone else’s bedroom?
Andddd can you get home a sleep mask to cover his eyes and some ear plugs? That way you can make a little more noise/ light.

I’m with other posters, can you walk around a mall, go to the library, a coffee shop, find free events happening (indoors) in your area? I would be going crazy too, I hope you make it through!!!

@MissTatas: , @jny1179: I hadn’t really thought of a coffee shop. Unfortunately, the closest one is one town over. But I may have to see if I can renew my Books-A-Million membership and use their free wifi (plus I could easily spend hours in there reading). It’s one of few place in town where you can go in with a laptop and sit for hours without getting funny looks from cashiers because you have yet to buy anything. There is hope yet!!
@Peachytalk: I’d trade any day! I prefer the cold. I can add as many layers of clothing as I need to but there’s only so many I can remove!
@JenniMichele: The only other bedroom I could hang out in is my mom’s, and she’d be over my shoulder the entire time. Plus, besides the floor, there’s really nowhere to sit. But I may have to look into the mask and ear plugs- if I could just get some light to read I could be content all day long! (I wouldn’t want to force him into ear plugs since I know they aren’t very comfortable.) If nothing else, I’ve been meaning to renew my Books-A-Million card; I could use their free wifi, read books, and hey- with themembership I even get discounted coffee!

@ForeverBirds: I don’t really have a face mask, but I have earplugs that I love and I use them all the time. They go on vacation with me and everything, so I’m sure your SO could at least try to find some that are comfy to give you a little more freedom. The ones I have are the first ones on this page.

@ForeverBirds: can you buy a 200 dollar freestanding ac unit? then you can take it into the tv room, computer room etc?

You can get a cooling dehumidifier at WalMart for about $100. Turn It to 72 and set iit right by the computer desk. It will cool a single room.

@peonyinlove: , @MrsLongcoatPeacoat: I can’t really afford anything right now. It’s the beginning of the semester and I’m being hit up for fees and books my scholarship won’t cover and there’s a huge crack in my laptop screen that I need to have repaired before it gets worse. Such is the life of a broke college student.

@ForeverBirds: tell him ear plugs and a eye mask for 1 or 2 days of the week so you can get things done too.
