I work for an online wedding dress company and we are in our very slow season. We work on commission and not making sales=not making much money which means sucky paychecks and pissed off managers. I was having a really bad day and getting every ticked off bride that day who were complaining about everything. I was on a chat with this lady and she said I had screwed up her order over a pair of shoes. I responded back saying that I didn’t screw up her wedding because I had never talked to her before. I know I shouldn’t have said it and I apologized for it.
Long story short, the consulting group who was brought in to help build this company back up had a chit chat with me and HR and asked if everything was okay with me and told me to keep my head up. A couple of days later I went into work to find the schedule for the following week. My hrs had gone from 40 to 24. I was told this was because of my attitude with this lady and because I’ve been negative lately about not making sales. The head of the consulting group acts like nothing is wrong and pretty much ignores me. I out of the loop at work and everyone acts strange around me now.
I’ve been off the last two days and don’t go back to work until Sunday. I sent a text to one of my co-workers asking if the schedule was out and she said yes with a sad face. I’ve had a feeling that I won’t be on the schedule and they’ll feed me the BS that they don’t have hours for me becuase I’ve seen them do that to other people.
The company itself sucks. I have no benefits, no paid time off, sick leave, raises, nothing. I make great money when we actually sell stuff but when we aren’t it’s bad. I haven’t received one phone call out of the many applications I’ve filled out online and wondering if it’s a waste of time. Should I start going to the actual business to fill out an application? I’m so frusted and upset because they know I have bills and a wedding to pay for but they don’t give a damn. I just don’t know what to do.

I am sorry to hear that. That is discouraging and upsetting, but try to remember that your job is not your identity and that not everyone is the best at all jobs so don’t let it hit your confidence. Having confidence can really really help you get a new job.
What sort of positions are you applying for? Does it require a resume? If it does, I would look at your resume and ask people you may know for help editing it to really portray you and your skills in the best light. Your resume is your first interaction with a hiring manager and if its not pristine, the many other applicants will be chosen over you first.
Don’t be upset with the company either. Their job is to run a profitable business that focuses on customer service. If for whatever reason you arent helping them reach those goals, then they will let you go. Just like if you get a better job offer you would quit.
Instead I would go to HR and say you know you have not been working to your normal quality and that you would like another chance to demonstrate that you can do the job very well. Take a proactive approach and see what they say. It can’t hurt.

I’ve been here for almost a year and I’ve seen this company’s true colors. I’m applying for any position that has to do with office work. I enjoy sending emails, speaking with people on the phone, and other various tasks. I am upset with this company. Instead of having a talk with the employee and trying to help them improve they “disipline” them by taking away their hours.

@xshellx2003: I would still pretend to be apologetic to keep the job longer and in the meantime search really hard! In this economy I would be hesitant to let a job go without having another one lined up. Taking a proactive approach will probably surprise them if they are not used to this method and may earn you a few more weeks or months until you are ready to go, not when they want you to go.
Its easier to find a job when you have a job because employers like to know you are “employable”. If you dont have a job, especially because it was a dismissal it will make find another job much harder.

@lefeymw: I second what you said.
Keep you job until you find another one. But looking for something better is never a bad thing.

I’ve applied to about 20 different positions in the past 3 days and no bites. I sent the head hancho and my sup an email a few days ago apologizing for my action against the customer and how I don’t want to lose my hours or job and neither of them responded to me.

Sorry to hear you’re going through this! I worked on commission at a department store for a while after I graduated college and I experienced the same frustration with slow times, awful customers, deceitful coworkers, etc. At least you work online so while people are being nasty, you can act nice and polite and then bitch about them as soon as you hang up:) Just keep working hard at your job, stay under the radar with management, and devote as much time as you can to checking job sites, Craigslist, networking through friends and family, etc. It does pay off.

@xshellx2003: Talk to the “head honcho” in person. It will go a lot further.
As for applying for those other jobs. I dont know what kind of jobs they are, but many jobs and HR departments dont respond that fast. Some take a few days, weeks or even months.
Job searching is like an oil pipline. You pump, and pump and pump filling the line. Just when you are so tired of pumping the oil comes out the other side. It starts as a trickle and then it gushes. Keep applying and make sure you are applying with the best information. Make sure your resume is the best! If its not or you are not sure do some research as to how it may be improved. As a frame of reference, I put way over 40 hours into my current resume that got me this job and its only 2 pages. Its not an easy thing to do right.

My boss called, good news, I have 32 hrs this week, not as good as 40 but better than 24. Bad news. One of our vendors somehow did an unauthrized withdraw of 9K and now they are worried that everyone who has direct deposit (myself included) their checks are going to bounce, and the people who have a live check aren’t allowed to cash it yet. I swear if it’s not one thing it’s another with this place. At least I have most of my usual hours back. Now I’m just going to go in and keep my mouth shut. lol

@xshellx2003: Good, glad you have your (somewhat) hours back. Just keep your mouth shut until you can find another job. And that sucks about the checks I would be peeved!!

Well that is mostly good news! If nothing else its a nice reminder you have to be on your toes and good motivation to keep looking for a job. Good Luck!
I would recommend the book “What color is your parachute” Its a great career/job hunting book.
