I just found out that in order to satisfy our states 72 hour requirement we will have to be there for the Saturday wedding on Tuesday. Which totally screws up all of our honeymoon plans, we simply don’t have enough days available to do it all. We live way too far away from our location to go there a month beforehand to get it, and the license only lasts 30 days. So it looks like we’re going to get married before we get married?
I’m both excited and heartbroken over this. When will we celebrate our anniversary? The courthouse both feels more real and yet fake… I’ve been planning and seeing this beautiful ceremony in my mind and now its just going to be in the courthouse, and then our ceremony on our wedding day will feel fake too. Has anyone had to do this?
At least I get to be a two dress bride?! Lol thats the only part thats exciting, now I get to have a short dress too 😛

That’s so frustrating. Is there any way that you can plan the wedding somewhere else or is your family there? I would consider getting married in your local state before you leave to go there for the wedding. There are a lot of bees here who got married before their wedding for one reason or another.

Yea it looks like thats what we’re doing. We have already booked our reception location and it is where all of our family and friends are, we just happen to be working all the way across the country. I’m looking into getting married at city hall here in california, but its just confusing. I know that’s what my Fiance has wanted for forever though, so I guess we’ll both get what we want 😀

I don’t know how the laws work in NJ, but in my home state they let you petition a judge to suspend any waiting period for a marriage license. Like, in MN you have to wait 5 days… but for people who live out of state, they’ll usually let you get your ML the day before if there are “extraordinary circumstances” preventing you from applying sooner. Just a thought! Hope that helps.

I know that MA allows you to petition for a waiver for the waiting period to get a marriage license. You may want to look into that in NJ.
And about celebrating your anniversay… I think you get to pick whichever day you want. 🙂

Ah! I know how you feel. My wedding is at the end of August, but Fiance and I actually already did the courthouse thing at the beginning of July. He is in the military so we had to make it official early so that I would be able to get on his orders so that we’ll be able to live together right away at his new assignment.
I was really upset when he first told me that we had to get married before the wedding (especially since I really just started planning the wedding at the end of June.. talk about rushing things!) but in the end it was kind of nice. We had the fake/real ceremony near the base he is at now, without any family or friends, just us and a very hilarious justice of the peace. I was super nervous, but it was very special because it was so private. I’m not huge on being the center of attention so the big wedding idea is nerve-racking, but at least now I have had a practice round! It is also nice because we have that one moment in time that was just for us, plus with all the stresses of wedding planning it feels so much more comforting knowing that I have the support of my HUSBAND. Kind of silly, but really, its not as bad as the whole idea sounds.
As for anniversaries, we will be celebrating BOTH! 🙂

We got married last August by a Justice of the Peace @ our house – witnessed by our parents and my brother. Onyl them and a handful of friends know about it – no one else! We are celebrating in October w/a ceremony and reception. Sometimes I feel that the October ceremony will be fake too and what a waste of money this will be since we are already technically married – but then ont he other hand I feel like the marriage is “real” until it is witnessed by everyone we love!
We will be celebrating our 1 year anniversary this August and then celebrating our Anniversary in October afterwards – BUT I still plan on having a little rememberance each August since it is the true date :o)
Also – if you get the legal stuff over with by doing it w/ a Justice of the Peace – you most likely won’t be so stressed out the actual day of!
