I bought a dog door for my sliding glass door about a week and a half ago. My Aussie mix immediately started using it. My Boston Terrier still does not seem to know how to use it though. The dog door is not too big for him, he is around 30 pounds and very tall for a Boston Terrier.
The Boston Terrier is scared of almost anything. He is an extremely timid dog. He freaks out about windshield wipers, rain, vacuums, etc. I think that he is just scared of the dog door. When I first installed the door, I trained him to use it. We stood at opposite ends of the dog door and bribed him to go either way with treats. We started with the door completely open and eventually worked up him going through the door compeletly on his own. However, he did not continue doing it on his own. He now whines until I go to the back door and stand next to him. Then he will go through the door alone. Coming back inside, he will whine until I open the doggy door for him completely and he will still be scared of coming back inside. One day he even pooped inside right next to the doggy door while we were gone! My fiance is completely convinced that the dog is just doing it for attention from me. I think that he is scared. I am pretty disappointed because he loves to be outside and I thought that he would be really excited about having a dog door. I wish I could help learn how to use it. Can anbody give me some advice?
