Didn’t read the other response, just wanted to be up front about that.

I expected to plan our entire wedding in rural michigan for about 3-4k, ended up in the mid 5k area. It makes total sense to me how one could spend more than they expected to.

I knew with total certainty that we couldn’t exceed the 6k mark though, because my dad is giving us around 6k for the wedding.

We are having a catered wedding with open bar for 100 ppl.

We picked a venue that needed very limited decor, got my dress off of ebay, catered off the lunch menu, are plan to hire a “photographer” without training. Had we done anything less, it would have been a pretty bland wedding.

Also, we omitted a honeymoon and instead are going to Cedar Point for a day (an amusement park). Originally we walked to go on a cruise, but that was definitely far fetched considering our very limited budget.

Oh man. My parents paid for the whole thing, they offered. My dad wanted to keep it around 25k but after my mom went to a few other weddings, saw what our small city had to offer, she was OK with hiring a wedding planner from the big city (lol Calgary) and then it just doubled from there. So we basically spent 100% more of the original randomly decided amount!

@calibee79:  Her comments were funny and LOGICAL. I’m sorry, but if youre wedding is still two years away, you are no where near qualified to know what exactly goes in to the whole wedding cost planning until you are actually DOING it (or work in an event planning profession). She even directed this post to bees who are NEAR their wedding to weed out people who are just responding cause theyve got an opinion on everything.

We budgeted for 10k and ended up around 11k, not including honeymoon.  I think we made it work because literally we didn’t have any more money to contribute, lol.  Early on we made a list of what was important, and focused the biggest budget to those things.  OTher things either got cut or scaled way back.

This is exactly how I have been feeling! I wanted no more than 13K. We will end up at abut 20-25K, not including rehearsal dinner and honeymoon and rings. We are having a destination wedding (week for my Fiance and I and our families), so a big chunk is rental housing. And our photographer, who is 4K, waaaaaaaay more than I thought! I guessing under 1K for rehearsal, 2-3K for our honeymoon, and our rings are close to 5K (guessing though).

i can’t even think about it too hard, to be honest. thank god my parents are taking on the majority! (Aaaaaaand then comes the guilt).
