@cutexkitty: It is really hard to stop looking once you’ve started. Just try to think about your current kitty and how a new pet would affect her. After reading your post about how your kitty only likes you it made me think of a situation my friend just went through.

Her cat only likes her and does not do well with other animals. New people and new animals completely stress her out. My friend just got a new apartment with some extra roommates and one of them has a younger cat. Once this cat was introduced her kitty started getting really sick. They thought she had renal failure, but it turned out to be stress issues from dealing with the new kitty. She might have to give her cat to her mom now to allow the cat to get better and live a comfortable life.

I would ask your vet about what you mentioned in this post. Also tell him that you are wanting to get another animal, but are concerned about how your cat would react. He may have some tips or better advice for you than any of us. Try to resist the urge to look at photos of prospective pets.

Oh one more thing, I have a small one bedroom apartment like you said you have. I have two cats and one large dog and they do fine. My cats get along really well and they have ample places to hide when they don’t want to be near each other (under the bed, I put a bed in the closet, and in a kitty condo). My dog does fine since I arranged my furniture to maximize the amount of space she has to play in. I also take her for lots of long walks.

@cutexkitty: Aww I’m sorry I know it’s hard to resist the urge. I caved in and got my second cat and the dog… We seem to be the wayward home for pets that belonged to relatives that just couldn’t keep them though.

If you decide to get a kitty just make sure you look into how to properly assimilate them to each other. Keep the new one confined to a seperate room for awhile. This would allow your kitty to investigate the new one and get used to the scent. After a few days you can try opening the door a little bit for a short time to allow them to see each other. If things go well you keep allowing longer supervised interaction until they are comfy with each other.

Just remember that cats can live quite a long time (around 16 years). If you do decide to get a kitty you might want to have a back up plan in case things don’t work out with your current cat and the new one.

@cutexkitty: Hmm I’m not sure. You could try contacting local shelters and let them know your situation. Maybe they would allow you to foster a cat with the possibility of adoption? I would try no kill shelters and other local organizations. Make sure you check them out before going through with anything though. Hopefully a good shelter with proper vet records and positive reviews can help you out.

ETA: Oh maybe you could also offer to have them do an evaluation of your cat before allowing you to foster a kitty?

I only mentioned a no kill shelter because they might be willing to do work with you at your home to help with your other cat. Those shelters tend to be on the lookout for “foster parents” since they are usually small private groups.

I think socializing with the cats at the shelter might fuel your desire for a new pet more if you get easily attatched to them. I know I would want to take them all home. Darn them for being so cute…

@cutexkitty: darn that sounded like a good idea too. Too bad you can’t take your kitty to meet new cats in a neutral environment. Good luck to you!
