I am thinking about wearing my mother’s wedding dress, but I have a little problem. My mom is 4’11” and I am 5’6″! I really want to wear her gown, but I also really want to wear something long. I don’t want to cut it to make it tea length. Her gown is from 1978. It’s an A-line with a train. I have thought of having some of the train cut off and reattached to the front hem or wearing a sassy little petticoat that would peek out of the bottom. Do any of you have any thoughts or suggestions? I am going to see my parents next week, so I will post some pics, as I think that might help you get the idea of what I’m working with!

What style is it? Is there a seam at the waist where you could replace the skirt? It would help a lot if you could post a picture!

@RunnerBride13: I will definitely post pics next weekend. I hadn’t thought of altering it from the waist seam/adding a different skirt. Thanks!

Yeah it would be easier, I think (not that I am a seamstress or anything!) to add material at the saist. You would be able to either use some of her train material or maybe see if you can add like a different material altogether. You seem quite non-traditionalist (I’m feeling that because you said about having a visiable petticoat at the bottom) so you could even go for a cummerbund look with a different (vintage ?) fabric around the waist like a super thick sash-kinda hting.
I’m not explaing myself well – this is what I mean in pictorial (kinda) form.
waist-defining same-colour/style wrap-style with bit of bling.
Or like a more defined cummerbund-style with lots of detailing over the insert part
Or something completely different.
Or somethign inbetween
hope that better illustrates what I mean 😉

@mecattacow: Thanks for the suggestions! The photos help me see what you are explaining. 🙂

@bostonrh no probs! 🙂 I’m not very good at verbally explaining. Can’t wait to see pics of your dress!! : )
@BrandNewBride lol awww thanks!! 😀 I have a lot of problems with fit of clothes (I have a long waist and gorrilla long arms and a massive butt) so I have fixed mine up along the years. Never professionally, mind you!

Here’s a pic of my mom in the dress in 1978.. Not the best angle. Will post me in the dress when I try it on this weekend!
