and it was AWESOME!!! I had previously gone dress shopping twice with my mom and I just felt like I couldn’t form my own opinions since she was being a bit dominating with her thoughts.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my mom and I want her approval, but it was great to just stand there and look in the mirror and really think about how I felt in the dress. I thought it might be awkward to go alone, but the salon I went to was so great! The sales girls gave me their honest,non-biased opinions and were happy to take pictures of me.
Now I have a short-list of dresses I love and I’m excited to go back and show them to my mom. But I’m also ready to defend them if she doesn’t love them as much as I do. It also turns out my mom was not offended that I went alone and she thought it was a great idea too.
Anyway just wanted to say to all the bees out, there don’t be afraid to go alone!! It could be a really great experience for you. 🙂
EDIT: added a poll just for fun!

Well done! I think going alone is a great option. Other people’s opinions can totally sway me or annoy me. That was very smart. 😀

@HoyaTerpDC: That’s wonderful!! Great advice! 🙂

So glad you had a good experience. I prefer to shop alone, so naturally I shopped alone for my wedding dress. I had a great time and it never even crossed my mind to feel awkward about it. Like you, the shop attendants at 2/3 stores were fantastic to me.

I loved shopping alone. I went with my mom a couple of times, but then was on a business trip in San Francisco and had a free afternoon, so I went to a boutique there that I knew had a sample of a dress I had been wanting to try on, but no one in my area had (actually, no one on the East Coast had!). Tried it on by myself and was like, yep! This is the one! Easy peasy. That was a great day. I hate shopping with people normally, so there was no way I was bringing a gaggle of girlfriends to a boutique with me. Mom was enough, but I really loved going alone! Just me and MY thoughts.

I’m glad it worked out for you both too! I also prefer shopping alone so the idea of bringing lots of people with me to dress shop was not appealing either. But I kinda felt like I should
bring someone since it’s a huge purchase!
I watch Say Yes to the Dress and the consultants always say “don’t bring a big group” and of course the girls who brought 10 people never end up buying a dress because no one can agree on anything.

@HoyaTerpDC: Haha I was thinking of posting on this topic because I’ve always gone alone. I’ll get some comments implying that it’s sad or pathetic that I don’t have anyone with me, when I say “just me”, but honestly I prefer to find my dress by myself. The bridal salons in my area get booked quickly and it’s hard to find good times. I don’t wanna deal with the hassle of coordinating with 3 other BMs’ schedules, try to get an appt. that works for everyone, and then deal with differing opinions. I haven’t even considered taking my mom because she’s been pushing her agenda on me from day one for this wedding (yes she’s already commented on what style of dress she would prefer on me). But I will text pix to my BMs if the place let me take pix.

I also went alone and that is actually when I found my dress. 🙂

Wow people actually said that to you? Rude! I totally understand the scheduling conflicts too. Scheduling stuff with bridesmaids is like herding cats 🙂

My mom would have been crushed if I had looked at dresses without her so going alone wasnt’ an option. But I did a ton of recon ahead of time online. I had it down to a list of 4 to try on, one I knew I wanted (I think I’ve seen every picture of that dress that exists online). I still sort of put on a show and tried on a bunch to satisfy my family, but I got the one I had already picked out.
Sometimes it’s just so much easier to think things over without an audience.

Props to you! I couldn’t do it! The only kind of shopping I enjoy by myself is grocery shopping!

I just went shopping this week- and all by myself, thank you very much! It was a very good experience since I could just focus on what I wanted, rather than having an entourage pulling dozens of other dresses for me that I would feel obligated to at least try on. And I am a truly pear-shaped Bee, so I dread being paraded around in things that don’t fit right, being told things make my hips look “broad,” just being looked over critically in general. Ugh. Anyway I see you’re in DC- I went shopping in Columbia MD and loved it! I normally HATE shopping but this was- dare I say- fun! I left with my new dress in my hands and am so excited to wear it! Good luck with your final dress selection!

If you don’t mind me asking, where’d you go in Columbia (or you can PM me)? I actually drive to Baltimore for work so I go past Columbia all the time!

@HoyaTerpDC: I went shopping alone. My mom isn’t in to that stuff.
