Has it been cleaned recently? Is it definitely not dirt on the outside?

@SpecialSundae: I agree, could just be dirt.  I would look at it under a jewelers loupe.

It is possible that it cracked.  If it came with paper work and said it had no inclusions there, then dont they usually verify the stone, and have the buyer verify before accepting it?

If he didnt verify what he was buying and took possession of it, I’m not sure how you could argue it to the store.  If he took possession of it, he was accepting what they were handing over is what the paper work says he bought.   I guess I’d still try to bring it back and see what they say though.
