Try Isle of Palms, there are beach houses of all kinds and it is a really beautiful area near enough to downtown Charleston to drive in for the day. Beaufort is also gorgeous and probably less expensive. Myrtle beach is nice, it’s mostly tourists with a gazillion hotels along the beach (Ocean Blvd.) but they have some very very good restaurants with pretty much every option under the sun for dining and water recreation.

I love the Emerald Isle area of NC because it is affordable, secluded, and has warm water. There are lots of houses to rent with kitchens and there are food stores to cook at home (that is what we do—FI’s family goes every year). When you get bored of the beach there is plenty to do within a short drive—there is an aquarium, some great shops, and some great waterfront restaurants. This is more of a Nicholas Sparks/The Notebook kind of beach, not one with a boardwalk or anything crazy. But it is beautiful and we love it!
