Flowers surprised me a lot too – the first quote I got for my bouquet only was $450!  I ended up finding an Etsy shop to buy my bouquets from (one for me, 6 BM’s, and a toss bouquet for $293 including shipping) and we chose to do non-floral centerpieces.  I’m going to buy some silk flowers from Michael’s and paint some wine bottles silver for a little extra decor around the venue.  It’s all outside so thankfully I don’t need too much.

I was also surprised at linen rental costs, but I found a website that sold them for the same amount it cost to rent them (SmartyHadAParty.com – they’re already here and I think they are perfect).  Hopefully I’ll be able sell them after the wedding to offset the cost.

My VEIL.  I went in to shop for accessories at the boutique where I bought my gown.  I didn’t think to ask about prices on the veils before I tried them on, because, seriously, how much could a piece of tulle cost?

I fell in love with an elbow length veil that had crystal and pearl beading around the edge.  The lady went to ring me up.  It was $200.  That’s TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS.  FOR A PIECE OF TULLE.  I thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head.

lindsayE:  Haha!  I’m with you!  I’m not wearing a veil, but I bought a relatively simple beaded belt to wear with my dress and even after the discount she gave me, it was $133.

spiffanee:  wow! That is insane for lettuce! My whole meal including salad was only 13pp. I can’t imagine spending $4 less for only the salad.

22% service charge for the venue. Ugh.  Also, invitations and photography.  I had the hardest time finding a photographer under $2,000.

My caterer had a $60 ice cream scooping fee. Not a lot of money, but – seriously, a scooping fee?!

I’ve looked into purchasing ice too and the lowest price I’ve found is Wendy’s (fast food!) for 8lb bags at $0.99 each! Someone recommended McDonald’s for the same price but when I called McD’s they said they don’t sell it. Wendy’s said to call ahead so they make sure to have enough.

I don’t have a Sam’s Club or Costco membership but I think I called Costco and they said they didn’t sell ice.

Christina1015:  you have to find ways to cut that cost. You could buy a big deep freezer and buy your own ice for less than a few hundred dollars. I have a HUUUUGE chest freezer in my basement that I bought from Walmart last year for $200 and you get to keep that!!! Believe me it comes in handy! Bags of ice at 7-11 are like $4 each, so yeah, it’s not necessary to rent for $600. You can save like $400 just buy buying your own freezer.

Another tip on the ice situation: not sure if these are available where you live, but in my town (beach & boating community), we have these big ice vending machines (one is called Twice the Ice, but I think there are others too) that are really cheap and can dispense the ice directly into your cooler(s).  Try Googling ice vending machine near <your zip code> and see what you come up with.

I had a DJ tell me (with a straight face) that his services were $2400 (this is more than double the local average)…

I had to cough to stifle my WTF reaction.

lindsayE:  I bought my veil off ebay for $35 😛 WIN (especially for a piece of tulle I will wear for like an hour, since I don’t plan to wear mine the whole reception).

Christina1015:  Uplights cost HOW MUCH? for me…

I did it anyway.

And caved when I saw my photographer started offering cinematography, and he gave me a 20% off discount… ugh, I’m a sucker.

And yeah, I’ve seen some bridal accessories in some places that are like… $450 for a headband I could buy at Claire’s or The Icing for $13. I just pick it up, look at the price and go HAH! Nope.

MsKnitter:  I had a meeting with an event planner who worked for one of the big factory wedding vendors in town, and I shit you not, her services for the bottom of the line package (the day-of services offered), were $4,500. The planner I hired has done the whole thing for $1,000. I mean, really, $4,500?
