FH came up with the idea of a make-your-own ice cream sundae bar. We would possibly have someone serve the ice cream and let the guests put their own toppings on. I would buy all of this myself, not have it catered. There are only 2 problems:
1) Messiness. Are there any ways to make this as simple as possible, with little to no mess? I could slip a note in the invitations to be ready for a messy dessert (they know it’s a dessert bar) but that’s about it that I can think of!
2) How to keep the ice cream cold? It would be nice to have one of those portable ice cream carts, but I have no idea where I could rent one. They are a couple of thousand dollars new, and I’m not going for that!
Thanks in advance. I’ve searched the internet and can’t find any great ideas on this!

this seems rather problematic. very cute idea, but i think you would definitely need someone to man the station and rent those ice cream cart thingies. i would ask your local ice cream shops (baskin robbins, 31 flavors) about this, but it could get pricey.

We really wanted to do this too! Ice cream is my favorite food and I thought it would be awesome for our wedding. There are a lot of logistical nightmares so you definitely want to call local ice cream shops to see if they coordinate it. It just wasn’t in our budget (plus we have a ton of other desserts) so we had to forgo this idea. I’m still pretty bummed. I hope you can make it happen!

What about renting an ice cream truck instead? I’m sure there’s an ice cream truck that frequents a local park that would be THRILLED to get a night time gig. Pay him a flat fee and have him pull up out front at a designated time for your guests!

We are having one…this was my inspiration….My Fiance likes Ice Cream and I like Cupcakes so we are doing both

I’m doing one and the post above by @debaby01 was my inspiration as well.
We’re having the reception place (a restaurant) man the ice cream station so I’m leaving it into their hands, and if it gets messy, they’re the ones cleaning up. Also, they’ll be the ones responsible for keeping the ice cream cold. I made sure that they could do it and they told me it would be possible, so I’m hoping it’ll work out on their part!
I wish I could help out more but my venue is handling all the details. I’m just going to bring stuff to put all the fixin’s in so it looks pretty.

I posted this on the other ice cream thread, but it needs to be here too because I love it so much. I just found this awesome tutorial on 100 Layer Cake for ice cream cone holders. It’s ADORABLE!

We had one as part of our wedding package! My caterer took care of it all. It wasn’t that messy as I recall. I’ll have to dig up a picture. It wasn’t as cute as all the inspiration pics but eh I could care less. The guests were happy to have ice cream in August!
Do you have a caterer or are you self catering?
P.S. Gummi bears was the most popular topping for some reason!

We had one, and it was a huge hit! The caterer pre-scooped vanilla into little cups, and then they had a server there to put on the toppings that guests asked for. They charged me $5 a person, included all of the toppings and service costs.

My friends did this and it was awesome. They had someone man the station to help out. It was delicious! They put it where they had they’re cocktail hour so it was a little bit out of the way.

I plan on having one. I figured I can prescoop the ice cream into the bowls, set them on several trays, (one on top of the other) keep them in the freezer then just pull them out when it’s time. As for the toppings, I’m getting a silver or nice looking tray (dollar tree) for each topping, that way they splatter but stay on the platter.
