Over 18 years, it costs around $240,000 to raise a child (not including college!).  There’s no way I would have been able to even start to take on some of that cost when I was under 25.

I have always thought 27 had a nice ring to it for having a child. At least for me.

25 was actually the ideal age for us. That being said, we were done school, had established careers, bought a home, were financially stable, etc.

If all of the above hadn’t happened before we got pregannt, I would have been a mess. It was very important for us to have our ducks in a row before adding our little munchkin…

@ceemarie7:  Also, if I had been asked at age 18, I would have said like, “23 or 24″…but now that I’m 32, I’ll say, “Whenever a woman is ready.”

If you asked me the ideal age for medical reasons, I would probably say under 25. Your fertility is higher, but your temporal lobe is completely developed (if you are 20).

I didn’t read the entire article, but maybe people answered thinking physically, like me?

I think you need to be physically, emotionally, and financially ready. For MOST couples, given the average age to be married is 26 for women and 27 (maybe 28?) for men, I would say that under 25 is not the best time.

*while a couple does not HAVE to be married, many get married when they are financially and emotionally stable, so I consider that to be a good estimate of when people are ready.

Before 25 would have been ideal based on biology but socially and culturally for me 30 is the better option.  I have a graduate degree and I am established in my career in a position where I have decent maternity leave and pay benefits.  Not to mention that should my spouse unexpected die or leave me I would have no trouble raising the child on my own financially.  Looking back I couldn’t imagine having a child at 25 or younger!

@cora_123:  Yeah the vast majority of people 65+ and people with no college degrees voted under 25 for men and women. It’s probably bc the average age of marriage in the 50s was 21 for women and 23 for men. They just think people should do as they did.

I actually agree with the survey. I’d like to have a kid before 25, and I wouldn’t want to put it off until I’m in my thirties. If I don’t have kids by the age of 35 I likely won’t try any longer than that.

@ZebraPrintMe:  How old are you?  Did you go to a four-year university?  (Just mining for data.)
