    @mrshunnybunches:  I’d be surprised if anyone had a problem.  If you’re just learning, you might not want to stake money anyway.  Use peanuts or something to get the concept 🙂

    I’m pretty sure it’s ok, as long as there is no money involved.  Then it’s technically a card game, and not gambling.  When I was a kid, we played poker with candy. lol

    Poker is not gambling unless there is actual money on the table.  It’s like saying Monopoly is gambling.  The peanuts are a good idea!

    it’s not legal if you are using money.  if you are not betting, it is legal.

    In college the student organization that I was president of would host poker tournaments all the time. We couldn’t allow gambling, but we could let everyone in for free and have prizes for the winners. So as long as it’s not gambling, it’s fine.

    @mrshunnybunches:

    If you’re going to be using actual money, I’d check with the pub first, or just go to someone’s home to play. If you’re using peanuts or candy or something, it should be fine.

    FI’s employers have hosted holiday parties at public venues with casino themes and they gave everyone fake monopoly money and set up “gambling” tables in the venue. Lots of fun. That’s where I learnt to play poker 😉

    Yep if you’re not actually gambling it is perfectly legal.  Poker is a card game, it’s only gambling when you are betting money on it.

    If there’s no money it’s just a card game 🙂

    You could bet peanuts or M&M’s

    Was anyone else disappointed that this thread wasn’t far more exciting/dramatic? 🙂

    You should be fine. Poker doesn’t require money to be won or lost. Even if you play with chip they’re just a token to go along with the game. You get done and they all go back in their box, no one the richer/poorer.
