Congrats on the weightloss. I think you should try on all kinds of dresses to see what you like best. Certain dresses may be better for your body type than others, but that doesn’t make you fat. Preowned wedding dresses has a tools to recommend dresses based on your body type, so you may like to enter your measurments and see what they suggest http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/by-shape

It really depends on your body type – I have seen girls who are heavier than me pull off a mermaid and look beautiful and gorgeous, but I unfortunately have a body type where my extra weight is pretty much all in the stomach/hips, and not in the hourglass shape kind of way, much as I wish it was. You really just have to try it on and see how it looks on you!

I’m actually 185 now and I LOVE the way mermaid and fit and flare dresses look on me. Especially if they are corset backs. They way the corset lays and hugs you, you won’t have a chance to feel fate. :o) Here are 2 different dresses I was considering. I like the look from the back better than the front because you can see the shape better.
<— This one was not my size so it doens’t fit right in the front along the tummy or breast.
But it looks good in the back!! lol

They all looked terrible on me becasue of where I carry my excess weight. I have a really narrow waist, but big hips/thighs/butt, so they looked silly. I think until you try one on, you can’t really judge them!

you need to try it on. mermaids look great on me (5’6, 120ish) bc i have narrowish hips and they help me cinch in my waist to give an hourglass figure. i found trumpet/mermaid to be the most figure-flattering style for me. but i don’t think they’re extremely flattering on small waist/big hip girls. on the other hand, ball gowns looked horrible on me, but generally look great on small waisted girls.
just try it on and you will know instantly.

I bought a fit and flare (not a true mermaid) and this is what I looked like at 5’6″, 192lbs. I don’t think I look fat. I think you’ll be okay.

@Take The Reins: Yeah, that’s totally me, I weigh like 145 at 5’6, and those girls above me look like wayyyy better in a mermaid than I did, you just gotta have the shape for it. Most girls it seems do, but unfortunately it just wasn’t happening for me.
@KristenGotMarried: Gosh I still love your dress so freaking much, I wish the mermaids had looked like that on me!

wow ladies you all look amazing. =]

@Wonderstruck: i think you look great in that dress!! You look totally proportional. Now me on the other hand, with my tiny waist, GIANT hips i really looked awful.
To OP it really doesnt matter about weight, its the shape of the body, as everyone else has said 🙂

@Starzz: You are going to look AMAZING in a a fitted mermaid dress….. at 140 lbs and 5’5!!! I’m 5’6 and was at the same weight as you when I got my dress (fit and flare)……. you are NOT going to look fat…. you AREN’T fat!!!! You’re going to look great!!!

I actually think a mermaid dress (with rouching) made me look thinner and emphasized all of the right curves. I think you should go for it!!
Also, 140 at 5’5″ is *not* fat!! You will look lovely in anything you pick out, I’m sure 🙂
