- Wedding: September 2013
Hi Bees! My fiance and I have been on an avid hunt for a great venue. We wanted someplace like Gardencourt(still a potential for us) or Yew Dell Gardens but we honestly just don’t have 25k-50k to spend on a wedding which is easy to do for 200 people when you consider venue, decor, flowers, entertainment and then catering.
At first I was bummed. I personally wanted a wedding that was totally us but I also wanted to throw a big party for our family and friends because I simply LOVE parties and any excuse for a get together is a good one.
Anyway after reading an article on offbeat bride I realized it’s okay that we don’t have that money for a wedding. At that point I started searching for some “offbeat” places and came across The University of Louisville Shelby Campus. At first I was hesistant because the pictures provided online were so-so to decent but we toured the place yesterday and was so pleasantly surprised.
They have a huge, open, well manicured lawn with lots of beautiful trees and it’s off the main road so it provides a very quiet, natural setting for a wedding. The ballroom is huge and can easily accomodate 300 people plus a full meal set up, DJ, dance floor, etc. The decor is not overly opulent but is still very pretty and easy to decorate to your specific tastes.
The staff is insanely friendly, helpful and reliable. Every email or phone call I have made, if not directly answered, has almost always been returned within the hour. They do not require you to use a specific cater(although they do prefer Ladyfingers)
They allow you to come in after 5pm on Friday to decorate and/or rehearse and don’t really mind if you stay into the wee hours of the morning because security is onsite at all times. The building officially opens at 8am on Saturday but a security officer can let you in earlier if need be. You “officially” have the paper until midnight but it’s more of a time guideline than an actual rule. Staff members will help with set up and take down and you have until Sunday evening to finish cleaning up. You will have an official representative there for 3-4 hours during the ceremony and reception to help coordinate things and keep the flow going. You are provided with tables(circular and rectangular) as well as chairs and you are also given a list of very nice decorations that you can rent for EXTREMELY reasonable prices.
Plus if you are a student, staff, or alumni you get a 25% discount off the facility rental.
We haven’t officially decided if this is our place because we still want to visit the last two places on our list. Regardless at this point I totally recommend them to anyone who is lookin for a beautiful, reasonable and reliable place to hold their wedding and/or reception.
These days weddings are at a premium and it’s hard to find venues for a reasonable price who don’t tack on a lot of thing extra things that cost a fortune. It’s nice to find a beautiful space to have a wedding that doesn’t try to rob you of all your money.
