My RE put me on metformin while I was TTC because I have PCOS. I don’t have insulin resistance or anything else, and I am a thin.
At my 6 week ultrasound last week, I asked him if I should stop taking metformin. He said, “Ehhh…. yeah, I guess you can stop taking it now.”
The thing is, I’ve read that taking metformin can reduce your chance of miscarrying. The internet is full of stories of women who stopped taking it at the advice of their doctors and then miscarried (darn internet!). So, I’ve still been taking it.
My question: if you took metformin for PCOS while TTC and then got pregnant, when (if ever) did you stop taking it? Am I stupid to ignore my doctor? He sounded so unsure…

My OB has me staying on mine all the way through, but quite a few people mentioned that they stopped at 12 weeks.

My OB wants me to take it until 14 weeks after my LMP. He cited that it canhelp preventmiscarriage. I plan to phone back in a few weeks and ask if I can wean off rather than stepping cold turkey

@stillme: I took it and stopped on my own at 12 weeks

Thanks everyone… this is kind of what I was expecting. I was really surprised that he said I could stop at 6 weeks. Everything I’ve heard is that people take it for 12 weeks, if not longer. I’m just going to keep taking it and ask again at my next appointment.

I stopped taking mine at about 8 weeks I think. I was nervous as well, because I had a miscarriage right before. Now all is ok!
